With ARIA Award nominations for best group, best rock album and best single, Faker had a huge year in 2008. Recently reaching gold status our second album 'Be The Twilight' and single 'This Heart Attack' have truly emblazoned themselves on the nation's psyche. Top 10 single 'This Heart Attack' stayed in the charts for a whopping 40 weeks, reached 5 on the radio airplay chart, and was voted number 5 on Triple J's Hottest 100.
Coming a long way from humble beginnings in the sometimes murky waters of the Sydney indie rock scene in the late 90s, we released two EPs in 2001,"Sound Out Loud' and 'Kids On Overload' and several thousand years later released our first
album, 2005's 'Addicted Romantic', featuring the single 'Hurricane'. Thereafter we went off round the country playing festivals like the Big Day Out and the Falls Festival in addition to countless shows of our own, winning people's hearts with our unique combination of reckless energy, machine-like musical precision and fantastic dress sense.
Embracing change is what Faker has always been about. We just love it. As front man and sole original member Nathan Hudson puts it "there's something about this band to me, I always wanted it to evolve and embrace change so it all ties in." As a result we have had a different lineup for almost every release, but then that's basically how we roll.
Playing a major part in the making of Be the Twilight was producer Paul Fox (Sugarcubes, They Might Be Giants ,the Muppet Treasure Island soundtrack). "Paul made a point of tracking as live as possible and you can feel the energy of the whole band
interacting" says Hudson. This was a completely diferent process to making 'Addicted Romantic', where we recorded all the instruments separately, and where there were so many guitar parts we would have needed another four or five guitarists to play all of them.
Onstage is really where it's at for us though. Nathan takes on a whole new persona. "I'm pretty reserved and quite nervous actually. I guess being on stage where things are more exciting and chaotic is my antidote to that."
Keep an eye out for more festival line-up announcements in the near future for your chance to see Faker live.
BE THE TWILIGHT TRACK BY TRACK
This Heart Attack
About realising when it’s time to take some space… the point where you realise that you’re doing your own head in. It’s also a bit about being in the midst of a pointless argument.
Are You Magnetic?
this is a darker, Noughties take on Whitney Houston's 'I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)' about breaking up relationships and moving on, dealing with the mind game of am I holding on to something because of nostalgia or because I might never find somebody else, or just because. Maybe also asking “do you have it in you to find the right person?”
Killer On The Loose
A song about being destructive in relationships, making the same mistakes over and over, and the hope that one day you might learn from these mistakes.
Sleepwalking
It’s a song about being trapped and looking for a way out.
Lazy Bones
Get out of the house! We can all be lazy and sometimes it’s fun to be and sometimes it’s better to get off your arse and do something.
Voodoo Economics
Is a song about not being afraid to get yourself out of a rut you may be in, taking inspiration (and its title) from Ferris Bueller's Day Off.
Kid, Please Try Harder
A plea with someone to try harder… to not give up. It’s a love song of sorts.
Don’t Hide
This song is essentially a thematic reprise of Huey Lewis and the News' 1985 hit 'The Power Of Love', a song saying that you’ll do better if you risk more.
Lost & Found
Is about going mental over someone and getting through it. It’s about chaos and the good things that can come from it.
Dumb Mistakes
Loving someone and / or being with someone in spite of their failings. And hoping that someone could love you in spite of yours.
Radio Lies
An alarm call kind of baiting somebody to question stuff, maybe even your thinking.
Death Beach Party
Things song gives the record a location and is about a trail of bodies that you leave behind over the course of an evening.
