It comes as a surprise to some, but The Fall Colors are not Australian. Nor are they from New Zealand. No, guitarist/vocalist Julia Fernandez, bassist Jess Abel and drummer Shannon Handy live a little farther north: Portland, Oregon.
Why the confusion? Perhaps it all started with a Myspace comment. After posting an embryonic version of “Modern Major General” they received their first comment, saying, “Cool song! Kind of reminiscent of the Cannanes.” A few months later, Saint Louis Riverfront Times reporter Mike Applestein attested on his blog that The Fall Colors reminded him of “some of [his] favorite 1990s Australian bands, especially the Cannanes and the larger Chapter Music scene.” After an early show, a friend made a comparison to a band even farther south. “Your guitar sound kind of reminds me of The Clean,” he told Julia.
Geographic confusion aside, The Fall Colors have always taken this as a positive sign. The band formed in early 2007 when Julia, an obsessive four-tracker, met Shannon, who had drummed for much-missed bands Lunchbox and SF Seals. Over beers and greasy potato wedges at a local English pub, they discovered a mutual love of all things pop. Within months they were playing shows and parties all across the city. After a couple of attempts at finding a permanent bass player, they met Jess, a fantastic musician and singer who just happened to be sharing their practice space.
Two years and still going strong, look for a full-length album later this year.
