Out of a possible 16 bands, The Familiar Shapes song, “Tangled”, was the featured song of all radio advertisements for the Weekend's Pub "Battle of the Bands" on May 2nd. There was record attendance. Although the band did not form until as recently as August 2008, Familiar Shapes has an impressive catalog of refreshingly unique Rock and Roll—15+ songs spanning over an hour and a half. The band is comprised of four excellent musicians who each hail from significantly different musical backgrounds:
The incredibly talented lead guitarist, Evan Dralle, is the driving creative force, as well as an evil genius of guitar solos. Drawing on such influences as Stevie Ray Vaughan and David Gilmour, Evan brings a unique style of guitar to the table that is sure to project him into “guitar god” status.
In addition to his raw, southern rock vocals and uncanny songwriting ability, frontman Andrew Lawter brings a classic rock and ska influenced guitar sound that is nearly the polar opposite of Evan’s. The dichotomy of guitar sounds ensures that Familiar Shapes cannot be pinned down to a specific genre, thus allowing them to push the creative envelope.
Bassist Joel Evans, having grown up listening to No Doubt and Sublime, brings a funk and reggae element to the band that is appreciated by fans. It is not uncommon to hear the fans shout “Jooooooooooel” in the middle of a nice groove.
Returning to th ethe band is drummer James "Boo" Ackerman. Bringing his rapid fire stlye of drumming to the line up glueing the songs together with a true rock finish.
Although each of these members could easily be the sole focus of a successful band in their own right, they have come together to form what history is sure to dub “The Saviors of Rock and Roll”.
