| About Family Jewels |
|
when i was touring with jonathan richman and the modern lovers in the late 70s and early 80s, we used to play a song called 'ka-ding dong.' it was a hit by a boston doo-wop group called the G Clefs. this song had everything i loved about rock'n'roll. rhythm, infectious harmonies, and the adulation of an improbable love object. enamored, i followed its path through an apprenticeship with doo-wop, R&B, and roots/americana. together with partner Andrew Mazzone, we formed the Family Jewels. everyone in the band sings, making its musical weaponry greater than the sum of its parts. the band touches on R&B culled from
such obscure bands as the Colts, the Prisonaires, not to exclude Country, Rockabilly, and
Swing. what unifies the band sound is the syncopated background vocals. not mere
cultural preservasionists, the Jewels keep this music as alive as when it was first played.
