New York rockers Famous Letters (formerly known as Speedway) know how to put their trademark 70s-Beatle-rock sound to good use. Their seemingly unconscious avoidance of a particular song writing style, mixed with an unabashed nod to their influences, results in immediately familiar, instantly nostalgic pop songs.
Tim and Fowzy (rhymes with ozzy, and yes, that is his real name) met over a mutual love of all things Beatle. Locked up in a Vermont school, chance had Fowzy overhear Tim playing an obscure McCartney B-side on the piano and a long-term friendship and songwriting deal was struck.
Tims Nick Lowe/Flamin Groovies jangle, sat nicely next to Fowzy's Ramones/Britpop swagger on the school bus of rock, writing and recording what would eventually become some of Famous Letter's strongest songs. Only ever working in the privacy of each others company left little room for hiring a back up band. Luckily, as these things often go, the next stop saw them being joined by Nadirs Supergrass/Zeppelin attitude and rock solid skill. A peer and an equal in every way (sometimes more so), the 3-man rock machine Speedway, was born. In 2006, Speedway recorded their second EP and changed their name to Famous Letters.
Never afraid of a catchy tune, and with almost as many drummers as song styles (a waltzing lullaby here, a 3-chord punk romp there) the boys have been infecting the local New York crowd with live shows since the summer of 2003.
