About me:
"Born on February 3, 1926 in Yonkers, New York, Yates lived by his pen throughout his life, working as a journalist, freelance ghost writer (briefly also for Senator Robert Kennedy) and publicity writer, eventually starting his career as a novelist in 1961 with the publication of Revolutionary Road. His short stories are considered among the finest of the 20th Century. Despite this, only one of his short stories appeared in the The New Yorker. This story, "The Canal," was published in the magazine nine years after the author's death to celebrate the 2001 release of The Collected Stories of Richard Yates. Twice divorced and the father of three daughters, Yates died of emphysema in Birmingham, Alabama. It has been generally assumed that his heavy drinking and smoking of four packs a day contributed decisively to his premature death at age 66." - Wikipedia
Note: This site was not created by Richard Yates; sadly, he's no longer with us. This is a fan site for readers of Richard Yates. I'm guessing he would never use MySpace, but the kids do. And the kids need Yates more than he needs them. At this point, I guess.

Finished RR yesterday. One of the best things I've ever read. Knew he was a great and terribly underappreciated writer, but didn't realize how GREAT. Now I know, and can't wait to get into more.

"Piangere aveva senso solo se smettevi prima di diventare melenso.
E anche il cordoglio aveva senso solo se lo interrompevi
quando era ancora sincero, quando ancora significava qualcosa.
Perché era così facile che la cosa degenerasse: bastava lasciarsi
andare e si cominciava da abbellire i propri singhiozzi..."

I am in mad love with Mr. Yates. He wrote the best ending to a novel ever with Revolutionary Road.

Arguably the greatest and most honest writers that America has ever produced. Heartbreaking and sometimes physically depressing to read, pound for pound, I can't see anyone writing near Yates' talent. Sure, he was a mess at living, and parenting, and important things like being close to happy, but he will become immortal

Richard Yates was another Tuscaloosa hero. He'd ride down univeisty BLVD smoking with his oxygen take on. It was like watching a bomb go by.

I agree, Revolutionary Road is the absolute best. I'm worried about what will happen to it when it goes Titanic.
