CREATING KARMA (SYNOPSIS):

Karma, uptight fashion editor, becomes a poet after losing her job and moving in with her wacky new-age therapist sister in this first time feature by Jill Wisoff. While the film's screwball characters gives a nod to the sixties Peter Sellers screwball farces “The Party” and “I love you Alice B. Toklas”, it's to be enjoyed for its corny borscht belt humor and New York angst familiar in the works of Mel Brooks and Woody Allen.

Creating Karma is a truly indie film with a screenplay by and co-starring Jill Wisoff and Carol Lee Sirugo, a cast of over one hundred including top billed dancing diva co-star of "Saturday Night Fever" fame Karen Lynn Gorney as Karma's shopaholic mother Chanel, esteemed character actor Joe Grifasi and talented newcomers. Catchy songs by Jill Wisoff ("Welcome to the Dollhouse" songs/score, co-star in Todd Solondz's "Fear, Anxiety & Depression") and music by Joel Diamond (Sundance Winner “The Believer”, “Milarepa”).

Winner of two best comedy feature awards including the 2008 Best Feature Award at the Broad Humor Film Festival. Comedy

Publicity quote by the 2008 Broad Humor Festival: "This manic Bollywood-style romp from the 60's era of free love to contemporary pseudo-spiritual philosophy is big-screen farce full of fun!"

Official LA Splash Review:

“Farce is a genre where, if you do it right, your movie ebbs and flows comfortably between the ridiculous and the outrageous. And farce in full force is what you will get with the comedy feature Creating Karma. The montage cross dissolving motif employed in the film serves well to toy with time and add a healthy touch of the dreamscape surreal. Jill Wisoff and Carol Lee Sirugo are co-writers and co-stars in this “boobs to the wall” comedy with Wisoff also tackling director duties. CREATING KARMA was awarded BEST FEATURE in the 2008 Broad Humor Film Festival.”

"Kudos to Rahad Coulter-Stevenson for his noteworthy performance. The role of Vincent features a sock puppet as a co-star. Stevenson gives a lovely, balanced, eccentric performance in a role that could have very easily fallen prey to mere "impression of insanity" with less capable actor."

Neil Pedly for ifctv.com:

“With the rancid taste of the unmitigated comedy disaster that was "The Love Guru" still fresh in viewer's mouths, it's a brave person (or in this case, two) that would bring campy sitar players and kooky New Age therapy back to the big screen so soon. A directorial bow for musician and composer Jill Wisoff, this quirky comedy finds a well-to-do fashion magazine editor (co-writer Carol Lee Sirugo) undergoing a radical transformation into a poet when she moves in with her hippie half-sister (Wisoff)

HISTORY:

CREATING KARMA put in its dues with 2 years on the film festival circuit garnering 2 best feature awards and official selection picks in its festival version edit. This version screened at US festivals and twice in London as well as the Cannes Film Market. The film is being prepared for a pre-Xmas 2009 U.S. anamorphic widescreen dvd release as well as other formats for theatrical, download and broadcast.

FILMMAKER'S MESSAGE WITH CREATING KARMA:

Being in the arts in New York City I've had first hand experience watching as friends of mine have slowly been shut out of an acceptable quality of life, unable to continue in their crafts as musicians, actors, artists and dancers in Manhattan as rents have skyrocketed. This film was made in response to the hopelessness that's been experienced as a result of the economic crisis and gentrification of New York City and to bring a smile to the faces of those in similar states of desperation and flux from being pushed out of their homes for reasons beyond their control elsewhere.

Sep 16 2009 6:58 PM

Hello Everybody!

Friday morning Sept 4, on Turner Classic Movies, Bonita will appear in two classic films. The first, starting at 7am Eastern is the very rare gem HITLER'S CHILDREN from 1943.

This propaganda piece starts in 1933. Prof. Nichols' American school in Berlin is next door to a school for the Hitler Youth. Karl, from the latter, is attracted to German-American Anna, but events lead to their separation. Later, at the outbreak of war in Europe, Anna is removed from Nichols' school on presumption of German citizenship. Nichols becomes obsessed with finding her, as Anna undergoes a rather lurid odyssey through the Nazi nightmare. This movie is very rare and has not yet been released on home video.

Next at 10 am (Eastern) we have SEVEN MILES FROM ALCATRAZ made in 1942. After Pearl Harbor, convicts at Alcatraz prison live in fear of bomb attacks, driving Champ Larkin and his pal Jimbo to a desperate escape attempt which lands them on a tiny lighthouse island, where they take over. The five inhabitants are stymied in their efforts to summon aid. But the island also figures in the schemes of a big Nazi spy ring; which will win out, the gangsters' greed or their patriotism? Bonita stars as Anne Porter in this rarely shown film. It too has yet to be released on home video.

Please check your local listings and set your DVRs or video recorders NOW to capture these two great films.

If you are a classic movie lover, you will not be disappointed!
