About me:

My name is Michael Hubbard, and this is who I am.

I was born in the seventies, before the communications revolution but after men walked on the moon the first time. When I was a kid I fell in love with science, fantasy, comics, and music. I wanted to be either an astronaut or a rock star. I tried the latter; it didn't work, though admittedly I did almost everything wrong at the time.. I hope someday I have the chance to try the former, though the odds at the moment look pretty slim.

I started singing shortly after I could talk, and started writing songs when I was eight. The first song I really remember writing was about John Lennon's death. It was a terrible song, but I've improved since then. I also picked up guitar and bass along the way, and eventually played bass in a handful of bands. I've made a little money as a musician, though not much, but I only play now for my own entertainment. I have an idea for a new music project, and I might just start doing something about it before the end of the year.

My mom was paranoid schizophrenic. Her particular set of delusions involved religion and the occult, and my young mind considered that the best way to help mom was to understand those topics as deeply as possible. I joined a church in my early teens, and what time I wasn't playing music I was either studying religion or studying ceremonial magic. I was a pretentious git with no social skills, but I could read tarot, create a natal chart from scratch, recite bible verses from memory, and play YYZ note for note. I was also just a wee tad on the nutty side, in part, I think, because of the stellar example set in my home life.

The more I studied Christianity, the less sense it made to me, and eventually I left. I thought that there had to be a religion for me, though, and I started exploring, eventually finding my way to NeoPaganism, and from there to Wicca. It was while I was Wiccan that I met my lovely wife, and I practiced with the group I joined for a total of about seven years, while moving back and forth between Wicca and Asatru. Eventually I grew disillusioned of both, and am now happily atheist.

Where I am today -

I believe in freedom, including the freedom to believe or not believe as one wishes. I believe there is no God, nor any gods. Neither do I believe in the tooth fairy or elves at the bottom of the garden, and for the same reasons. I believe in hope, love, faith in one's self and one's friends, friendship, nature, and coffee. I believe the world is a pretty darn good place to be, and could be made even better. I believe in owning your words and your actions, and in owning the consequences of both. I believe in treating people well, because you only get to do this once and it's better if you can do it with good friends.

And I have some excellent friends.

I have a wonderful wife, an incredible three year old son, a great job, a decent place to live, and most of my baggage safely stowed in the overhead compartment. I'm losing weight, I'm getting ready to start hiking, and I'd like to start Tai Chi sometime over the next year. I read voraciously, I write sporadically, and would like to write professionally eventually.

I'm hoping to connect up with some old friends here, and make some new ones.

Who I'd like to meet:

Atheists, adventurers, steampunks, artists, makers, dreamers, shapers.
