Circulation: 12,000 copies distributed free to over 600 locations in LA and Orange Counties. We are very specifically targeted to music lovers with a thing about the hip and twangy sounds bubbling up from the underground. Printed at SW Offset Printing.
We are a new, free roots music and culture bi-monthly. We also cover film, visual arts, current events and politics and provide a compendium of old time know-how for the weary city dweller.
Music
We are taking a broad, general view of Roots music, ie, we have our own peculiar definition of what that is. We like to think of the roots as a metaphor for that which is primal, underground, seminal work from which other things spring forth. We like often under-recognized artists who have nonetheless held sway over major movements in our musical heritage. We interpret roots culture to mean that which keeps humans in touch with the Earth and her products even though we live in the city.
Movies
Anything by Luis Bunuel, Terry Gilliam, David Lynch, and the comedic stylings of "Superbad"
Television
Has ill effects on the mind, body and spirit
Heroes
FarWest Almanac is a free, bi-monthly roots music/arts magazine with an initial run of 10,000 copies. The concept is simple: today we live in a world where people from all countries are connected culturally in a more profound way then ever before. This changing world has given rise to music, arts and culture that could not have existed in previous eras. Looking behind this change, we can reconstruct the pathways that have lead us to this moment. Culture is the laboratory of art, and the raw materials used in our experiments are the roots that have been laid in the past. FarWest Almanac attempts, much like an investigator, to trace the evolution of popular culture through its diverse roots. Bringing together artists, musicians, critics and patrons our magazine offers a diverse collection of opinions about film, music, visual art, food, gardening, and anything that warrants investigation and analysis. Our first issue will be widely distributed throughout Los Angeles, the San Fernando Valley, Anaheim, Long Beach and in limited numbers nationally. Traditional almanacs provided their readers with useful data including meteorological and agricultural facts. Our almanac is the cultural equivalent, and contains reviews of various mainstream and underground media, calendars of events, social/political critiques, helpful tips and everything else needed to effectively arm the modern person with the tools they will need to trace the evolution of an ever-changing beast, our world. To understand the current situation, look no further than the events that have brought us to this point in time. Look no further than the roots.

oddly enough, about an hour before i got home to read the comment you left us, i got stopped by a "seatbelt checking point" cop...this was at topanga school drive at around 12:30 am...he harassed me about my car smelling like weed and being in topanga, and made me throw my stuff away, it was shit, made me feel so out of place in topanga...horrible...anyway, i drove past you guys on the way to getting my weed taken. ahahahah.
i just had an idea about doing an era issue, for like canyon living and the music culture behind it. from topanga to ojai or something, even to big sur, but by era, stoned, just thinking aloud.......ahaha
