130701 was set up as a sublabel of FatCat Records on July 13th 2001 (hence the label’s superficially cryptic name) for the release of the first Set Fire To Flames record ‘Sings Reign Rebuilder’. Since then it has gone on to develop a style of its own, encompassing the more digestible forms of modern classical and traditional orchestration but with a coupling of more abstract sounds – field recordings, radio static and various methods of digital and analogue signal processing. Not to limit the sonic palette, guitars, drums and electronics also make it into the 130701 mix, culminating in an overall sound that is eclectic yet strangely and beautifully unified over the course of our release history and future titles.

Those that know the work of artists we have released - Max Richter, Sylvain Chauveau, Hauschka and the aforementioned Set Fire To Flames - should be familiar with the basis of the largely instrumental (save for some narrated text or captured vocal snippets) 130701 sound. Often incredibly graceful and delicate, yet with powerful emotional weight, the mood is predominantly (though not exclusively) mournful and autumnal, with a vague but barely concealed subtext hinting at a haunting sense of loss and decay - of passing time, fading memories, lives and locations.

Following Max Richter's score for Ari Folman's 'A Waltz For Bashir', we have increasingly considered ourselves to be a suitable source of music for moving media. This has been compounded with the latest of Max's records, 'infra', which is a work expanded from material originally commissioned for a ballet. As a result of these activities we are poised to delve further into working with film, animation and performance and invite interested parties to look into our catalogue of releases.
