FAT SOUL's musical direction has changed a lot since 2003, moving from a heavy jazz influence to the classic soul-funk-jazz sounds of late 60s/early 70s aritsts like Grant Green, Jimmy McGriff, Kool & The Gang, Jack McDuff, Freddie Hubbard, Joe Henderson, Miles Davis, Grover Washington, Jr., Lonnie Smith, the Meters, Sly Stone, and Jimmy Smith, to name but a few. The band also follows artists like Soulive, Galactic, Robert Walter's 20th Congress, and Marcus Miller, who have been influential as well. Ultimately FAT SOUL is attempting to acheive a unique voice within the realm of soul/jazz/funk/blues/New Orleans/hip hop.
FAT SOUL - saxophonist David Halliday, guitarist Tommy Hopkins, keyboardist Jeremy Abernathy, drummer Chris Snarr, and singer Danny Tarasevich - has been entertaining audiences in the Mountain West with their unique blend of soul-jazz, funk, R&B, and other party music since 2003.
Versatility, showmanship, diverse musical influences, and energetic intensity characterize FAT SOUL's performances, which have been featured at such venues as the Park City Jazz Festival, Salt Lake International Jazz Festival, Utah and Park City Arts Festivals, and the Rock Springs (WY) Brews and Blues Festival. FAT SOUL maintains a rigorous performance schedule around their home base of Salt Lake City, playing numerous clubs as well as providing entertainment for numerous corporations, such as the American Cancer Society, USANA, and Wells Fargo Bank.
Each member of FAT SOUL brings his own unique musical perspective to the mix. Leader and saxophonist David Halliday toured the U.S. with Blues diva E.C. Scott, toured Europe with Synthesis (BYU's top jazz big band), and produced and written numerous songs for television and produced several CDs for his independent label Lone Peak Sound including three vocal jazz CDs. His award-winning saxophone playing has been heard on hundreds of recordings on TV and film and other recordings and he continues to be one of the Mountain West's most sought-after performers. Guitarist Tommy Hopkins has probably the most impressive resume of the bunch having toured the world with the Donny Osmond and writing and producing music for hundreds of mainstream film trailers, commericials, and video games. Keyboardist Jeremy Abernathy, hailing from Washington, D.C., is the best-kept keys secret in the Mountain West, having mastered the Hammond Organ (including left hand bass), and utilizing a variety of vintage keyboard sounds (clavinette, Rhodes, Wurlitzer) as well as modern synth sounds. Drummer/groove-machine Chris Snarr has been a mainstay on the Salt Lake City music scene having MC'd and played percussion with Salt Lake super group the Disco Drippers for over a decade as well as drumming for numerous other acts. Vocalist Danny Tarasevich brings the amazing showmanship he has perfected in his years of acting for film and stage as well as his amazing vocal range and versatility to FAT SOUL's shows.
