    Rescue Me (by Judith Archer)

Will you take me home with you?

      I can't promise I'll be good
No one has taught me how to act
or behave as a parrot "should".
My first owner didn't treat me right
He said that I was "bad"
He never forgave me that first bite
After that, he was always mad.
He shoved me back into my cage
And so I started to scream
Then he hit me in a rage
And my life became a bad dream.
So now I scream and yes, I bite
    I'm angry and misunderstood
But please, take me home with you
Love me and I'll be good.
Please let me come home with you
And spend some time with me
I can be sweet again I know
    Take me home, you'll see.
My next owner swore at me
I learned to say things back
So now my words are crude and rude
    Please cut me some slack.
If you let me come home with you
    I'll learn some nicer speech
If you are kind and give me time
    I'll change my vulgar screech.
My next owner just HAD to have me
She thought I was "way cool"
But now she doesn't have time for me
She's busy with boys and school.
That's when I began to pluck
    I'm not pretty anymore
I won't be much of an ornament
if that's what you're looking for.
I may never grow new feathers
My chest may always be bare
But my soul I know could heal itself
    if only someone would care.
My last owner died and left me
She said that she'd made plans
But she never followed through on them
and I've fallen into bad hands.
    Please overlook my failings
Please end this pain and strife
Please, please take me home with you
I'll be your friend for life.
Please take me home and treat me right
    and let our friendship grow
Please let me come home with you
This time it will work, I know.

About me:

Welcome to Feathered Kisses Aviary Sanctuary & Rescue. We run a rescue and sanctuary for exotic hookbills out of our home in Southeastern NY. We are happy to announce that as of January 9, 2009 Feathered Kisses Aviary Rescue & Sanctuary has filed with the IRS its intent to operate as a Non-Profit Organization. We have been assigned an EIN # as required by law. This # is 26-4003767. Feathered Kisses is part of BOCES extended classroom curriculum and is available for educational programs to private and community groups. Free grooming for your birds are available at the rescue location. Behavior and Nutritional Counseling is also available at the Rescue or In home (fee).

Much has happened in the last year. Our Education Program has expanded. We've visited nursing homes, retirement communities, schools, preschools, weddings, birthday parties and community events. We are now part of BOCES extended classroom curriculum. Call or write us for information on a program.

Free grooming for your bird is available at Feathered Kisses. During your grooming session we will be glad to discuss nutrition, cage requirements and any behavior or health problems your bird may be having. Our goal is to help your parrot be the type of companion that will be a welcome addition to your family for its' lifetime.

In home Grooming, Behavior and Nutritional Consultation is also available. Please contact us to set up an appointment. We have experience with birds from parakeets to Macaws. We use gently techniques and strive for a comfortable, positive visit for all involved.

All fees go to the upkeep of the birds in the rescue & sanctuary.

If you feel so moved, click the donate button. This will take you to Paypal where you can give what you can. If you need a little convincing...look at the slide show of some of our permanent residents. We use these birds in our education program. We also invite folks to come visit and meet the birds. Those people in the photos are happy visitors, many who are holding a bird for the very first time. .

We are trying to raise funds for an addition for the birds. It is being built with their needs in mind. 2 big sliding glass doors on opposite ends, lots of light and a big sink for "Mom" to clean up the mess. And we always can use some help with the feed bill. We buy pellets 3 to 500 pounds at a time (we do sell DR D's diet here at the rescue) at a time and we go through about 65 pounds of fresh and frozen produce a week, so...we appreciate the help.

Checks for Donations may be made out to: Feathered Kisses. 807 Trim Street, Kirkwood NY 13795

Thank you for giving...it is we the human who turned these birds into what we get here at the rescue. Please read the poem "Rescue Me". I've read it 100 times and it still makes me cry. It is why I do what I do.
