Originally hailing from the East Coast, Mieka Du Franx began to
explore underground dance music in the early 90s in New York City,
where she found herself plugged into Manhattan’s hottest clubs, at
the age of just 15. Mieka's passion for rhythmic beats began as a
young girl, who grew up listening to her father and brother's
drumming. As she matured under the influence of beats, she
naturally gravitated towards dancing. Professionally trained from
the age of five to the age of thirteen, Mieka practiced ballet, jazz,
and tap. As a teenager, she discovered a more fluent style of dance
that suited her best, freestyle. Her passions for freestyle dance and
music lead her to the clubs, where New York Freestyle and House
music were thriving. The clubs lead her to the DJs and the music
makers. Her desire for an education doing what she loved opened
her eyes to much more to be discovered. From there, she chose
formal training at Northeastern University with a major in Music
Industry.
After discovering the limitation of formal training, Mieka relocated
back to Manhattan where she attended The New School to study
MIDI, where she could have hands on training, while at the same
time, held business as the Public Relations Coordinator for the
infamous Satellite Records. In 2001 Mieka moved to Hollywood,
California to attend The Musicians Institute, where she enrolled in
the Recording Artist Program for extensive recording, studio
production, and digital media, earning a certificate in Recording Arts.
In LA she slung rekids as usual and clocked in as a house & techno
buyer of a local shop. From LA, she paved her way North to
Vancouver, BC. Vancouver has provided a crafty platform for Mieka's
multi-media explorations, from her music production to her music
label. Lab time at the city's Laguara College for Ableton Live has
gained her technical insights for a nu developmental approach to her
production, which has effectively reinvented her production style for
her music label imprint, Felinephonix Music.
The label was formed in 2005 with its first record press, and
continues to appeal to DJs around the world as it stretches to do
things different. From the second release, FPX was recognized by
some of the world's leading DJs and publicized on BBC radio. Within
only six releases, the label had three major licenses. With strength in
the ranges of House thru Tech-house, avant guard accents, and an
emphasis on lyrical experimentation, Felinephonix Music has Mieka's
voice as an FPX signature element. Inside the production box,
projects include, remixing, vocalizing, songwriting, and edits. Outside
the box, community development for Vancouver's hottest
underground event management, Popkiller is dedicated to
showcasing premiere DJ's and live acts. Presently, Mieka has been
given the honorable opportunity to remix Ralph Falcon's 1992 classic,
"Every Now And Then", which was released in spring of 2009 on New
York city's famous, Nervous Records. Another big break for this lady
is on the main stage at this year's annual Detroit Electronic Music
Festival, Movement; giving a lead-in for some of the biggest talent in
industry, including Francois Kevorkian, Carl Cox, and Steve Bug.
Mieka's approach to working from the inside-out highlights her
natural ability to instinctually coordinate her spectrum of many
talents expressed with an ease of authentic creativity. Her ideas
appear to steadily rise from a spirit of pure fun, which in turn have
manifested in her multi-media endeavors with unique flavor.
I'm an unconventional artist, not into the conformative class, and not so interested in the mold.
I make music for people to feel, and that is a subjective thing.
I'm kinda Crazy with a mind that loves to learn and a body that thrives to move.
My eyes are obsessed with colors and my ears crave warm timbres.
I'm primal for instinct, quiet with intuition, and forward with action.
I seek energies far beyond my own.
I'm a huge supporter of people I believe in.
I spark with determination and passion.
I'm out to hype what I love and who I love.
I don't have time for my passion in music to be a game, so don't call me a "playa".
Yeah I'm bossy sometimes..... but you'll still like me for telling you how it is. pfff
