The Baiji (Lipotes vexillifer), a Chinese freshwater dolphin, is venerated as the «Goddess of the Yangtze». This divine cetacean, however, was declared functionally extinct in 2006, after 20 million years of existence. The title song of this CD is about the fact that humanity continues to saw the very branch on which we are all sitting. On the Verge can be seen in the same context. The urgency of the alto saxophone solo is full of positive energy which calls for action. Trade Winds helped me to cross the Atlantic Ocean many years ago. Here, the title also refers to the exchange of musical phrases between the wind instruments. Ripasso has been written under the influence of the Italian red wine by the same name: a Valpolicella made by fermenting young wine with the skins and lees left over from making Amarone. Porc-épic, meaning porcupine, is a blues with a twist, laying the foundation for spiky and energetic soloing. This contrasts with the hypnotic mood of Friifad, which bears the name of a mythical and very exposed chamois hunter’s path in the Swiss Glärnisch massif, where I worked as a goat herder. I was inspired by the overtone series which is still used by alphorn blowers and in Swiss Naturjodel, in which one or more voices sing a melody without lyrics. Due to glacier melt-down and rock decay, it is nowadays a very difficult climb to get to Friifad. Both Primavera and Whiteout Blues are about the heavy winters in Québec. The first evoking the outburst of vitality at the long-awaited arrival of spring, the second having been written during a heavy snowstorm in December 2007.
Happy listening! Félix Stüssi

REVIEWS:
Doug Fischer, «The Ottawa Citizen», June 22, 2008: «In contrast to Buddy De Franco's comfortable style, the opening set from Swiss-born pianist Felix Stussi's quintet was raucous and intense. If Stussi's music sounds like that of anyone else, it is the late bassist and bandleader Charles Mingus, who also had a knack for making five or six musicians sound like eight or nine. And, like Mingus, Stussi's tunes often shift between chaos and hard-bop soloing, in this case powered by the terrific two-punch saxophone front line of Bruno Lamarche on tenor and Alexander Cote on alto and soprano.»
Duke Eatmon, «Homerun», CBC, Radio 1, June 6, 2008: «The album Baiji contains some of the most interesting music I’ve heard in a long time ... Stüssi is probably one of the most generous bandleaders I know: all members get their share and the band plays like a real unit.»
Ottawa International Jazz Festival program, 2008: «If you think of jazz as cool, think of Félix Stüssi: Give Me Five as downright breezy. The tune “Give Me Five” is a lilting, quicksilver breath of fresh air as the melody glides over some intriguingly complex changes. Stüssi ... has a playfully percussive piano style reminiscent of Thelonious Monk. It’s easy to see why his latest project, Give Me Five, won the 2007 General Motors Grand Prize at the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal. ... The band can recall classic 1950s bop, but don’t be surprised if their journey takes them right up to the precipice of the avant-garde.»
Martin Schuster, «Concerto Magazin», October 2007: «Original, audacious, virtuoso… This music swings like hell and bridges the gap between tradition (sometimes it sounds very «monkish») and modernity effortlessly. And the most important thing: at every instant you can feel that the musicians had a lot of fun recording this CD. Please, more of that soon!»
Götz Bühler, «Jazz Thing», 09/07: «… Not only are all twelve of Stüssi’s original compositions very well conceived but also their interpretation is priceworthy …»
Irène Schweizer, January 2007: «The compositions and arrangements of Félix Stüssi sound very refreshing, always swinging and played with a lot of skill...»

Jessica Dorsey
