“Fernando is a first rate singer and a musician’s musician. His songwriting has an alternative slant with a fresh innocence that’s very much a part of Fernando.” - Marianne Faithful
“I have always thought Fernando is a very advanced human… maybe I should study with Fernando because he’s really on a very high level of existence through his music.” – Lou Reed
World class bass player/singer/songwriter/producer, Fernando Saunders is releasing his 3rd CD I Will Break Your Fall featuring duets with long time collaborators Lou Reed and Marianne Faithfull. Rolling Stone Magazine says it’s “an album of beautifully crafted pop songs and ballads that tug at the heart strings. The duet with Lou Reed [“Baton Rouge”] is achingly beautiful.” The CD will be released in Canada on June 17, 2008 on Summit/Conveyor//Universal while Saunders will be in Toronto for the North By North East Festival as a touring panelist and possible showcase tbc.
Saunders came to international prominence as one of the core players with pop artist, Hamilton Bohannon, and then as a key member of the pioneering rock/jazz ensemble, The Jeff Beck/Jan Hammer Group. In the early '80s, Saunders started long-term collaborations as a player, producer and co-songwriter, with the esteemed urban rockers Reed and Faithfull
The new release will have an exclusive bonus track “Delusion” and a new remix of “I Will Break Your Fall.” Musicians will love the two instrumental jams “Bass Talk” and “Live in Spain” which take the listener on a musical journey from improvisational jazz to funk to Latin inspired rock while showcasing Saunders mastery on bass. Two alternate versions of “Lover” and “All For You” are included which were recorded in Iceland with pared-down arrangements. Canada’s Kevin Hearn (Barenaked Ladies) is featured on piano on the Marianne Faithfull duet “Backstreet Girl.”
During his career Saunders traveled the world recording and performing with music legends Joan Baez, Steve Winwood, Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, Joe Cocker, Slash, Heart, Pat Benatar, Tori Amos, Kip Hanrahan, John McLaughlin and even Pavarotti. Saunders recalls “at first the rock artists wanted me involved because of my r&b and jazz background, but then after years in rock the R&B and jazz artists wanted me for my rock experience.”
Saunders has recorded and produced three critically acclaimed solo albums, Cashmere Dreams (Grudge/BMG), The Spin (A&M) and the current I Will Break Your Fall (Summit/Conveyor//Universal).
Nice to hear from you. Thanks for the kind words. Kev's told me alot about you. Great stuff. Look forward to meeting you next time you're playing in Australia.
Hey my brother, I was very excited by our phone conversation today and am anxious to get started. Looking forward to working with you more than you know. Let us do something wonderful! Love "Baton Rouge"! Best, Monty
I am honoured that you like my song dear Fernando - I wish you all the magic from your own deepest heart to come through on your new album. Yes I can sing on it via cyberspace - we have the technology. We can do it in a 2-3 day turnaround. Cheers and best wishes Kim.
Thanks for the friendship, Fernando. It's a great pleasure to hear your music. I saw in Spain for many years with Lou Reed. Unforgettable! Best wishes from Madrid.
Thank you so much for your nice comment about my song, and for your friendship. It's so cool that you're from Detroit too. I think you might get a kick out of the story of how I got turned on to your bass playing. I lived at State Fair and I-75 when I lived in Detroit. There was an amazing DJ named The Electrifying Mojo on WJLB (perhaps you've heard of him? I listened to him every night). The station was a soul/funk station, but Mojo would play all kinds of great music of all genres. I was a young bass player (trying to master such things as "Miss You" by the Stones, and "Livin' In The Life" by the Isley Brothers).
So one night Mojo plays "My House" from the brand new "Blue Mask" album. Your bass was immediately beautiful, exciting, inspirational to me, and went straight into my heart. The harmonics and scales complimented Lou's voice perfectly. Mojo called you by name, and talked about your playing afterward. I didn't have much money - but I went to the record store the next day and bought the album.
Thank you for all the great music since then, and for the inspiration, and for letting me know just how beautiful and important the bass can be.
Hey Fernando thanks for the add! We've met a couple of times a while ago when I was recording in Todd's Pyramid Studio. I was the young guitar player, Dan! Still love your music, keep in touch!
Hi Fernando ! Thanks for the Friendship & kind words , very honored ! ! Pleased to discover your myspace page; compliment on your great work ! Thank you for supporting independent music!!! Marc
Hey Fernando, nice to hear from you too! I'm listening to you almost every day right now, cause I found Jan Hammer Group Live in New York 1976 on CDBaby. Wow, intense stuff! Also, I think I heard you with Larry Young in New York 1975, but I might be wrong. Did you play Carnegie Hall with him in July 1975? I'll check your recent stuff out, of course!
