Sara Magenheimer and Eben Portnoy, both in Flying, began playing as Fertile Crescent in 2006. The project began as a performance art piece from inside a "personal cave" made of black fabric. Since then the duo expanded to making by turns explosive and intimate songs using drums, guitar, and myriad samples and has toured the USA playing with such contemporaries as Deerhoof, Lucky Dragons, Avocet (Meara O'Reilly), Some Dark Holler (Erika M. Anderson), and others.
