Nothing happens overnight and nothing spectacular happens without hard work. Just ask South African rock band Fevertree and they’ll tell you, “We’ve paid our dues”. Years of hard work has seen Fevertree build a steady fan-base and gain significant industry support, both of which keep growing exponentially.
Quest for a Cure, Fevertree’s debut album, dominated South African radio with five top-ten singles; ‘You Can Believe’, ‘Addicted’, ‘A Million Miles’, ‘Beautiful’ and ‘Something in the Way’. Beyond extensive airplay Quest for a Cure received rave reviews from publications as diverse as Heat, Stage, You and The Star. Thus, it came as no surprise when Fevertree was nominated for a South African Music Award in 2004.
Constant touring saw Fevertree rise from strength to strength. The band’s talent soon gained recognition in the corporate sector as Fevertree became affiliated with high-profile brands like Fender, Gretsch, Etnies, Guess, VW and SonyEricsson. This has seen Fevertree’s singer and songwriter Garth Luke become a Guess model in 2006 alongside some of South Africa’s top models. It also meant that Garth’s unique edgy voice was used in the 3 time Gold Loerie award winning Golf GTI TV campaign, aired in South Africa, New Zealand, Korea, Australia and Japan. Fevertree clearly has something that people are after...
Towards the end of 2006 Fevertree became the first and only South African band sponsored by Electronic Arts. The world’s largest computer games manufacturer has fully committed to supporting Fevertree’s road to global stardom. It is clear that EA are serious about Fevertree having used the song ‘It’s Forgiven It’s Forgotten’ in the Fifa 2007 / Xbox TV campaign. Fevertree are currently in the final negotiation stage with yet another major international clothing label. How much better can it get?
The release of Fevertree’s second album, Under a New Regime, signified a change in direction as they adopted an edgier sound. Long-standing fans were thrilled with an album that captures Fevertree’s live show and attracted an entirely new audience.
It is rare for South African radio to support a song across national, regional, campus and retail stations. The first single off the new album reinforced that Fevertree is a unique force to be reckoned with. ‘Cannot See’ was the fastest moving song to reach No.1 on 94.7’s Homebrew Top 10 while listener votes pushed the song to No.2 on 5FM. Campus, retail and internet radio enthusiastically played the single as it reached No.1 on KovsieFM and RMR, No.2 on UCT Radio and RadioSA, No.4 on PukFM and Red Cap Radio and No.10 on MFM.
Fevertree is quick to acknowledge their fans for their success. Since the release of Under a New Regime the band has become the 2nd most popular local artists on myspace. The only South African band with more friends being international rockstars and label-mates Seether. The personal interaction with fans around the world has proved to be the best feedback any band could ask for.
In the wake of a smash hit single Fevertree has become one of the most sought after bands in the country. The band was selected to support Evanescence, 3 Doors Down, Staind and Hoobastank at the biggest rock concert in SA; My Coke Fest. Fevertree was also called on to support the United Nations World Food Programme at the Walk the World fundraiser. Even the Lions rugby team had Fevertree performing at Ellis Park Stadium during the international Super 14 tournament. On the 20th July Fevertree will be supporting another international act in South Africa as Fall Out Boy hits Johannesburg.
An impressive track record and rapidly growing fan-base has cemented Fevertree’s position as one of the most exciting groups to emerge in South Africa. As all the hard work pays off we can only expect Fevertree to make a gigantic splash in international waters, in true Musketeer Records style!
