THE DEATH OF ART
Taking stuff for free means ending up with a massive amount of data on various storage devices (i.e. iPod, cell phones, hard drives, PSP. etc) but losing the admiration, the respect and the appreciation for art.
Like this art becomes worthless because it is free. Due to oversaturation and it all being "free" (illegally) you can get as much as you want- so it literally means NOTHING. Maybe we cannot turn back the time (pre Napster) but we surely can try to keep our kids informed about the importance of art and how crucial it is to have something to look up to and admire in life.
FREE BUT LOW/NO QUALITY
These days, what you get purchasing/or illegally downloading a single or an album online is a compressed file and a tiny cover on your .mp3 player and you listen to it with low quality head phones. Almost no one owns a stereo anymore and allegedly CD's will be phased out. With a digital purchase you get almost zero information on the band you like so much (names, who plays and wrote what, their stories), the people behind the making of the music (engineers, designers, etc) and....nothing tangible. All virtual-all free.
NOT SO LONG AGO
Remember how much it meant buying (or receiving as a gift) a record! Remember how much the entire package mattered. The story behind and the reason for the music to be created in the first place. The dreams, visions, fantasies and the extreme and selfless dedication that went into the making of and the release of the album.
Illegal downloading is killing independent music and all arts. It makes it almost impossible for new artists to break and ask yourself: Those cool artists (bands, directors, painters) that started out 'low budget style' and were all about ART...where will they be? They will most likely disappear as it is getting very hard to survive as an artist these days.
Think about that when you are getting a new song, album, film, TV Show or software next time and maybe, just maybe you'll........BUY it. Why should you PAY for it if you can have it for FREE?
Because it keeps the people around that create what you like so much.
