This letter is in response to the Burger King Editorial published January 25, 2008.
For the record, I was born and raised in Naples; my family started off as migrant farm workers and we struggled together to make Naples our home.
As a community, we must not forget that Naples is also home for many poor and many non- whites. Gentrification will not flush out those who care about the marginalized poor and non-whites of Collier County. We see injustices in our communities and we point them out; we do not shut up when they send the cops or ICE or threaten to take our jobs away.
The kind of sentiment that is expressed in the above referenced editorial is reckless. Reckless because there is no doubt in my mind that Burger King is bluffing. Reckless because, though Burger King headquarters is based in Florida, the NDN is really the only newspaper in all of Florida taking Burger King's side. It does not speak for me; nor does it speak for any of the people that I know.
ONE PENNY MORE PER POUND; how will this bankrupt Burger King? What is so wrong with worker solidarity? What is so wrong with poor people banning together to ask for better pay?
I was referring to Follett, our bookstore contractor. They have very rigorous rules about their suppliers for apparel. I am sure that Laura Jensen, the Bookstore manager c an give you the details.
Sincerely,

This e-mail is in reference to a presentation I attended several weeks ago, in which you were a guest speaker. I was pleasantly surprised at your mentioning of Florida Gulf Coast University's (FGCU) sweat-free apparel available for purchase. You did not use these exact words, however, this is what was represented.
I am president of the FGCU Progressive Alliance and we have been doing some research on the FGCU apparel; mainly, where it is produced and whether the factory employees earn a sustainable living or work under sweatshop conditions.
Our student organization is interested in acquiring more information pertaining to the above stated. The question now is, do we speak to you about it, or should I seek assistance with the Procurement Specialist, Mr. Jack Foley?
Thank you for your attention to this matter. Should you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact me.
Sincerely, Angela Cisneros, President FGCU Progressive Alliance
These average temperatures are as close as I can get to the actual forecast so you may want to check online the closer we get to the weekend.
I believe we have covered the basics. So please: 1. Review the attached menu and let us know your thoughts; 2. Email a complete list of all your attendees from your shool, asap, with names and phone numbers; and 3. Email any questions you may have.
Thank you we look forward to seeing you. Please drive safely!
Some of you have been here before, others of you are new. Please, whether new or repeat campers, allow us to go over a few policies or "rules" that must be abided by.
First, the rate will be $10.00 per person, per night. We accept Cash Only for this weekend.
Secondly, we must insist there be no alcohol and no music (electronic or accoustic). We have many other campers here at Lake Pines and we must respect their peace and quiet.
Upon arrival you will be asked to check in at the office. If you need directions to the campsite please check our website, www.lakepines.net or call the office if you need more specific directions. We will require a list of all attendees from your schools, complete with names and individual cell phone numbers. This list will be used to check each person in as well as a list we can use in case of emergency. Maps to Ft. Benning will be available upon request. After check-in you will be directed to the camping area and instructed where vehicles can be parked, etc. There is a bathhouse here plus we will be bringing in porta-potties for you to use.
This year we are going to try something new - offer you some hot, catered food! Attached is a proposed menu. Please let us know if your group will be using the catering services or if there are any suggestions to the menu. Any suggestions will be considered but can't be promised. We're hoping this catering service, though, will help to provide some warm meals for you (it can get a bit nippy at night!). Speaking of nippy, here is the extended forecast:
So, I called the camp grounds where we'll be staying, I still need to confirm, so I need a head count of people who ARE going. Email me to verify Please. It's $10 per person per day. We should be getting there Friday night; Saturday is the rally; Sunday is the memorial service and things should wined down around 4pm; We'll be leaving Sunday night to get back Monday morning.
Right now we have an estimate of 10 people going, so if it's $10 per night per person and we're staying for 2 days, that's $200.00.
I'm still trying to coordinate our transport. to rent a 12 passenger van, it costs $130 per day, unlimited milage. We'd pick up the van on Thursday Nov 15; and bring it back Monday Nov 19. That's 4 days xs $130 = $520.00 plus tax and insurance. FGCU Progressive Alliance can try to get funding from their budget, it will not cover everything, and they don't get the money upfront, they get re-emberesed with proof of purchases; so it's not even guaranteed.
We're working on organizing fundraisers, so we need your ideas! Garage sales are great when you have a lot of variety; I made $120 in one day once. There's also the Bake sale, which I'm making brownies tonight! And I can make up to $100 profit from one batch. So let's get this party started. I was thinking about having a party at my house. I wouldn't want to just charge people at the door, I was thinking maybe we could have a dance off or something or maybe I could and other girls or guys could volunteer to dance while people donate money for each song we dance??? I'd dance to some reggae all night! And it would be a good opportunity to run a bake sale at a party also.
