The Way I See It
In this innovative book, Dr. Temple Grandin gets down to the REAL issues of autism, the ones parents, teachers, and individuals on the spectrum face every day. Temple offers helpful do’s and don’ts, practical strategies, and try-it-now tips, all based on her “insider” perspective and a great deal of research.
No More Meltdowns
It could happen at the grocery store. At a restaurant. At school. At home. Meltdowns are stressful for both child and adult, but Dr. Baker can help! Author of the award-winning Social Skills Picture Book series, Dr. Jed Baker offers parents and teachers strategies for preventing and managing meltdowns. His 20+ years of experience working with children on the autism spectrum, combined with his personal experiences raising his own children, have yielded time-tested strategies, and results!
Basic Skills Checklists
Easy-to-use, informal assessment tool that brings method to the madness of classroom assessment. It focuses on pre-academic, readiness, and academic skills expected from learners in the early elementary years. Simple, customizable charts make it easy to record children’s progress in skill areas such as basic concepts, reading/language, math, fine motor, and independence. Author and experienced teacher Marlene Breitenbach developed these helpful checklists in special-needs and inclusive classrooms while serving children with autism and other developmental disabilities.
The CAT-kit
World-renowned expert on Asperger's Syndrome Dr. Tony Attwood has teamed up with Dr. Kirsten Callesen and Annette Moller Nielsen of Denmark to create a powerful yet user-friendly tool that gets straight to the core of the thoughts and emotions behind behavior. The CAT-kit offers an easy, hands-on way for young people to communicate with adults, and each other.

About me: Wayne Gilpin founded the Future Horizons publishing company in 1996. Before that, he was publishing car repair guides and law books. But his son’s diagnosis of autism rerouted his career path. He joined the Autism Society of America and was voted president in 1987. Collecting as much information on autism as he could, Wayne was saddened by the fact that all of the resources at the time were very negative and offered little hope for his son. But his experience told a different story. His son Alex was a gentle, honest, and intelligent person, and Wayne was confident that Alex would overcome his obstacles and defy the odds. To bring a little light into the autism community, he compiled and published a book called Laughing and Loving with Autism. It contained humorous and touching stories from parents of children with autism. It was the first book to really capture the positive aspects of these kids, and it gave other parents hope.
Now, over 100 books and DVDs later, Future Horizons is the leading autism publisher in the world. We focus on materials that offer hope and practical strategies for parents, teachers, therapists, and others in the autism community. We aim to publish only materials that will make life better for people with autism, both immediately and in the future. Whether you’re a parent, professional, or a person on the autism spectrum, keep up the great work out there, and thank you for the work you are doing.

We are excited to let all of you know that we have officially launched the AWN's Forum and Website. A million thanks to our Beta Test Group as we could not have worked out the bugs & kinks without your participation over at the site early on.
1.) AWN's official color theme is red; however, our Web Developer, Lori Berkowitz has given you additional theme colors to choose from in case the red causes you sensory issues. You will have a choice to switch to a blue or green theme at any time.
2.) Please do not hesitate to let us know if you come across any kinks while you are over at the site as we are new, and in the beginning we expect this could happen. Hopefully the beta testing has taken care of the bugs by now. *fingers crossed*
3.) Please take a moment to introduce yourself and post a comment over at the Forum. There are hundreds of posts and discussions going on over there which were started by our Beta Group, and we are looking forward to having you join in the conversations!
Just got your catalog! I think what you're doing is great, and I am definitely going to have to get some of these books! Great resources for parents... thanks so much!!! Kim
AWA welcomes ASAN President Ari Ne'eman and Board Member Paula Durbin Westby, organizer of Saturday October 31st Washington DC area protest against Autism Speaks. We'll be hearing from them about ASAN's protest at Autism Speaks' DC area walk-a-thon Saturday as well as the growing wave of protests against Autism Speaks around the country, why its happening, where its going, what its implications and importance will be for the neurodiversity movement & the autistic community. In addition, we'll be checking in with ASAN on some of their advocacy priorities inside the beltway, asking about how Autistic people will be impacted by the health reform packages being considered by Congress and what pending legislation on school abuse might have to help Autistic students.
