Corinna Smith's Interests
|
| General | music-ing, music education, ethnomusicology (especially of American string culture), music philosophy, anthropology, primatology, reading, cooking, camping, and more music. | | Music | Where do I start? Everything. Recommend something new to me! I won't promise to have heard of it, but I love new discoveries, and usually I'll find something I like about pretty much anything.
| | Books | Annie Dillard's "Pilgrim at Tinker Creek," and "For the Time Being," Boris Pasternak's "Dr. Zhivago" (as well as his collections of poetry), John Banville's "The Sea," Sartre's "Nausea," Ram Dass's "Journey of Awakening," Richard Preston's "The Hot Zone," Daniel Quinn's "After Dachau" and "Ishmael," Miranda July's "No One Belongs Here More Than You," Faulkner's "Light in August," Thich Nhat Hanh's "Peace is Every Step," Fernando Pessoa's "A Little Larger Than The Entire Universe" and many more. Music nerd favorite: "How Equal Temperament Ruined Harmony (and Why You Should Care)" by Ross W. Duffin | | Heroes | There are lots!! I have many heroes within the fiddle world who are also really great mentors and wonderful people, willing to show me tunes, offer advice and encouragement, or even get into a little good-natured mischief and silliness. I've also been fortunate to study with some amazing professors at MSU, and I'll always look up to my first violin instructor, Bob Phillips. That being said, my parents (for a thousand reasons) really are my first and most influential heroes. |

About me:
visit my new
music page !!!
I love music-- learning, teaching, performing, listening... and especially late-night, all-out, soul-baring jam sessions with good friends.
I hold a degree in music education from Michigan State University, where I studied classical violin with Dmitri Berlinsky. I'm certified to teach K-12 music (band, orchestra, choir, and general music included), and have been a studio teacher (violin, viola, fiddle) for a decade. I really love the process of teaching through the whole spectrum of students, beginner-to-advanced, child-to-adult, and I'm lucky to have really fantastic students!
I am also a serious student of the fiddle, and spend most of my free time (and money!) at fiddle camps, national festivals, and as many concerts as possible. I've been fortunate to meet and learn from many of my heroes in the acoustic music world through the years; some of my absolute favorite musicians are also some of the most down-to-earth, friendly, and wonderful people you could ever hope to meet.
In addition to teaching, am a freelance musician; I love being able to perform frequently with some of my closest friends. I've been a side-(wo)man for some very special projects, and have recently started writing more of my own material as well. Please check out the musicians in my "top friends" section- they are fabulous!
I'm passionate about teaching creative musicianship, with the goal that students of all ages and abilities will be able to not only interpret and execute existing music appropriate to their level, but actively participate in the creation and evolution of music, right from the start. Ask me about my philosophy of music education and I'll probably talk your ear off for a few hours...

Who I'd like to meet:
people who are outstandingly passionate about life, particularly musicians, travelers, readers, tree-climbers, primatologists, philosophers, hikers, humanitarians, astronomers, teachers, creators, and big-dreamers.
