MusicWhere do I start? Everything. Recommend something new to me! I won't promise to have heard of it, but I love new discoveries, and usually I'll find something I like about pretty much anything.
BooksAnnie Dillard's "Pilgrim at Tinker Creek," and "For the Time Being," Boris Pasternak's "Dr. Zhivago" (as well as his collections of poetry), John Banville's "The Sea," Sartre's "Nausea," Ram Dass's "Journey of Awakening," Richard Preston's "The Hot Zone," Daniel Quinn's "After Dachau" and "Ishmael," Miranda July's "No One Belongs Here More Than You," Faulkner's "Light in August," Thich Nhat Hanh's "Peace is Every Step," Fernando Pessoa's "A Little Larger Than The Entire Universe" and many more. Music nerd favorite: "How Equal Temperament Ruined Harmony (and Why You Should Care)" by Ross W. Duffin
HeroesThere are lots!! I have many heroes within the fiddle world who are also really great mentors and wonderful people, willing to show me tunes, offer advice and encouragement, or even get into a little good-natured mischief and silliness.

I've also been fortunate to study with some amazing professors at MSU, and I'll always look up to my first violin instructor, Bob Phillips.

That being said, my parents (for a thousand reasons) really are my first and most influential heroes.

About me:

visit my new music page !!!

I love music-- learning, teaching, performing, listening... and especially late-night, all-out, soul-baring jam sessions with good friends.

I hold a degree in music education from Michigan State University, where I studied classical violin with Dmitri Berlinsky. I'm certified to teach K-12 music (band, orchestra, choir, and general music included), and have been a studio teacher (violin, viola, fiddle) for a decade. I really love the process of teaching through the whole spectrum of students, beginner-to-advanced, child-to-adult, and I'm lucky to have really fantastic students!

I am also a serious student of the fiddle, and spend most of my free time (and money!) at fiddle camps, national festivals, and as many concerts as possible. I've been fortunate to meet and learn from many of my heroes in the acoustic music world through the years; some of my absolute favorite musicians are also some of the most down-to-earth, friendly, and wonderful people you could ever hope to meet.

In addition to teaching, am a freelance musician; I love being able to perform frequently with some of my closest friends. I've been a side-(wo)man for some very special projects, and have recently started writing more of my own material as well. Please check out the musicians in my "top friends" section- they are fabulous!

I'm passionate about teaching creative musicianship, with the goal that students of all ages and abilities will be able to not only interpret and execute existing music appropriate to their level, but actively participate in the creation and evolution of music, right from the start. Ask me about my philosophy of music education and I'll probably talk your ear off for a few hours...

In this old world that we live in
There is one great joy that everyone can share,
The joy of giving to the
People for whom we care;
If you show love in small ways
It is always there.
To be giving and forgiving
Is to know the reason why we're living.
What's so hard about giving?
It's a perfectly simple art
The trick is to live with love from the start
And to give with an open heart.

Dear Corinna
May your Christmas be as special and unique as you are!
Nabeel

URGENT: Wanted Two Bands for Label Consideration

There is currently a search for two types of bands for record label consideration.

*** Note: PLEASE IDENTIFY IF YOU ARE IN GROUP 1 OR 2 IN THE SUBJECT LINE OF YOUR RESPONSE. Emails are being reviewed by different representatives.

1. A Pop/Rock/Commercial band with female lead. Band must consist of 2 guitars (Prefer both guitar players to be of lead caliber. However, one lead and one rhythm is acceptable), keyboard/piano, bass, and drums. Lead vocal, followed by backing vocals, in that order, is a plus as it relates to other members of the group. Average age of the band cannot exceed 28 years of age.

* Group must have an outstanding lead vocalist.
** Musicianship throughout the entire band must be very strong.
*** Group cannot currently be under any contract of any type that is related to the music industry.

2. A Modern Rock band with male lead. Must be a complete band but there are no prerequisites as it relates to the make up of the band. Average age of the band cannot exceed 23 years of age.

* Group must have an outstanding lead vocalist.
** Musicianship throughout the entire band must be very strong.
*** Group cannot currently be under any contract of any type that is related to the music industry.

XXX - If you meet the minimum qualifications as described above. Email a link for your MySpace Page and if applicable, a link for your website to: recordingartistsearch@gmail.com

Only send one email with your links. Due to the volume of responses normally received for these types of opportunities. After review of your material, you will only be contacted if there is an interest in attending one of your shows by a label representative. As such please to not send any follow up emails regarding selections. If you were not contacted back, there was not an interest.

Thank You.

After you've finished here, you may like to hear this poem sung on myspace...

Poem 162 of 230, WalkaboutsVerse
(please see my blog):
TEES TO TYNE: FIRST IMPRESSIONS - SUMMER 2001

Where traditions are not so rare;
    Sea, country and works scent the air;
A multitude of monuments,
    Planted tubs and patterned pavements.

The longish pedestrian malls;
    The remnants of defensive walls;
Historic buildings are a gauge
    Of the respect for heritage.

Wheat, rape and pines in the fields;
    Estuaries guarded by shields;
Long sandy beaches and wide scenes;
    Romantic-ruin go-betweens.

Rivers in parts licked by trees,
    Or fringed by boat clubs, wharfs, gantries,
And crossed by practical delights -
    Varied spans, forming pleasing sights.

Fine churches headed at Durham;
    Football kits ad infinitum;
Kept castles - one for study;
    Masonry behind masonry.

And, with moulding-works out that way,
It’s somewhere for a longer stay..?

Thank you very much for your reply Corinna. As a matter of fact, albeit I like musics, being an Engineering student, I cannot give it the time & effort it deserves. So I just listen to music during my freetime and that's all. My choice is specially alternative rocks, Bryan Adams and some Indian Bollywood songs(I do not think you have heard about them.) Since you say that you are a teacher, certainly you are much older than me, lol. I am just 21. Do you teach music in Michigan University or privately?
