Music..[1984] R.E.M Reckoning [IRS]
A singer mumbles in the spotlight of private epiphany amid a dervish of shadowy action, Bill Berry's thug-garage drum, Mike Mill's weird harmony and Peter Buck's punk-Byrds guitar backing up wails about shifted statues, harboured ghosts and seven Chinese brothers. After the empyrean drift of their 1983 debut Murmur, Reckoning found R.E.M reaching into their post-punk beginnings as the half-moons of their singer's weird camera mind came into eerie near-focu. If Mitch Easter and Don Dixon's unsentimental production added an unsettling, keening edge to Michael Stipe's wail it also gave the 'underground' R.E.M a kick into the mainstream. Alternative was born here.

We've been talking about possibly recording there for years, so it's a great feeling to finally have something down on the books. Now we've really got to get our act together!

The picture of Mitch in MIX this month is fantastic. I'd forgotten Mitch's pseudo-mutton chops. Grow 'em back! Great article as well.

I am reading the Mix Magazine Classic Tracks article on REM's So. Central Rain, not even halfway through and your quote about the MCI console meters has given me a good laugh. You certainly have a way with story-telling.

Hello all, Thought I'd share a first look at a rough montage from my first Documentary about a granite sculptor who worked for a tombstone company his entire life, never signed a piece, and wound up working uncredited as the master sculptor for the Stone Mountain project. Thank you and thank you Mitch,
