Die Faszination für Frank Zappas ironische Zungenbrecher-Frickel-Rock-Fusion überkam den Bassisten Pascal Grünenfelder anno 1987, als er in seiner jugendlichen Unschuld zum ersten Mal mit der kompositorischen Genialität und dem absurden Humor von Stücken wie Zomby Woof, Dont Eat the Yellow Snow oder Dinah-Moe-Hum konfrontiert wurde. Überwältigt vom musikalisch brillanten, respektlos antiautoritären und humorvoll ironischen Ausdruck des Meisters aller Fusionen, begann der Bassist Zappas Universum mit staunenden Ohren zu erforschen. Inspiriert von den experimentellen Soundcollagen der frühen Mothers of Invention, den ausladenden 70er Jahre Jazzrock-Helgen, den bombastischen 80er BigBand-Rockformationen um Wackermann, Bozzio und Colaiuta und den modernen Orchester-Werken des Varese-Verehrers Zappa, reifte der Entschluss, mit einem Haufen Gleichgesinnter ausgesuchte Perlen aus dem schier unendlichen Repertoire des Meisters selbst zu interpretieren.

In vertrackten Rocktunes wie Inca Roads oder Zomby Woof lädt FiDO zur Achterbahnfahrt durch Zappas irrwitzigen Kosmos, neben wehmütigen 60er-Jahre Heulern wie Let's Make The Water Turn Black oder Take Your Clothes Off When You Dance schwelgt Grünenfelders Truppe hemmungslos im Pathos eines Sofa und zelebriert vielstimmig obskure Geschichten von sprechenden Hunden, stinkenden Füssen, traurigen Eskimos und allerlei andern Kuriositäten des Lebens.

Die zehn bühnenerfahrenen Musiker interpretieren Zappas Klassiker virtuos für die Jetztzeit, scheuen sich nicht vor dem unkonventionellen Umgang mit dem Material des Komponisten und beantworten Zappas Frage Does Humor Belong in Music? mit einem begeisterten Ja. Improvisatorische Freiräume werden schamlos ausgenutzt, stilistische Grenzen aufgebrochen, die musikalische Vielfalt und der kompositorische Humor von Zappas Werk voll ausgeschöpft.
