Seraphim was formed as a free-jazz outfit in the Fall of 2003. The group consists of veteran musicians brought together by psychologist and bassist Ken Critchfield to explore the emergent process of freely improvised music. This group builds on Ken’s earlier work in SLC with bass and drums (resulting in “Foundation,” released 1998) as well as with another free-jazz outfit; the Brooklyn-based, Holophrase. Compositions are spontaneously created in the moment, or involve loosely-defined parameters for the form and structure of a piece, requiring the musicians to stretch themselves in unusual directions. The result is a sound that rests almost entirely on dialog and conversation between the individual instruments – alliance, disagreement, misunderstanding, boredom, miasma, complete connection, it’s all in there. “Seraphim” was chosen as an identifier for the group because of the simultaneous association with mythic concepts of heaven and creation – creating order from disorder – as well as with destroying angels, returning order back to chaos.

No, I meant shi#...for a while I also had written next to my photo "DO WHAT YOU LOVE AND F^$% THE REST" Every now and again I respond a little to impulsively to my mood updates:)
The Blank Canvas Event is tomorrow night. We hope to see you there!! Its going to be an amazing art party and we could use your support. There will be tea cocktails, a silent auction, and we are raffling off a Vespa so don't miss it!
i just found a score for a barry guy piece called: "anaklasis for two double basses"
i emailed barry guy for a rosetta stone or magic decoder ring and expect that he will either be thrilled and helpful in deciphering his genius or disgusted with my showing ignorance.
either way, you gotta see this score, man. the notation alone is beautiful.
i don't think we should use it this time, but i think we should book another two band night and do this piece in the middle.
it would require more of a concert setting than a bar setting, which i would like to try to foster at the urban lounge sometime, but don't see happening anytime soon.
i love "heaven and earth" it reminds me of my favorite belinda carlisle song "ooh baby, love comes first, we'll make heaven a place on earth..." do it up.
So I started practicing surfing the crowd noise for conversations at a party last night, it went interestingly: mostly I just think people are drunk and kinda lost, generally. Putting conversations together (take one speaker from one side of the room and one from the other) is kind of fun if you work at it, but sometimes it's a stretch to get it to work out.
Herschel Bullen and Marco Blackmore on Reeds, Patrick Campbell on Drums and William Lovell III on Contrabass. That's the band we all know as The Grande Escalante Staircase. Should you and I just do an arrangement of stairway to heaven?
I don't know what happened, but I see the words now. Looks great!
BTW: Some people pay to be bathed in mud...think of it as a "treatment". Ok, probably not so good for the band equipment. Well, be careful, and may the luck o' the Irish be with ye.
