So , I’m writing my own bio, big deal.
For fuck sake why - you may ask?
Don’t I have friends who could do that for me?
The answer is: Yes, I do have friends that could probably do a much better job than what I’ll come up with. But what would they say?
They’d say:” Yeah, sure, I’ll do it. Just give me the facts and a discography and don’t forget to write down everything else that you think is important and should be mentioned...
Wow, amazing!:-)
Well here I go then: writing down what I think should be mentioned.:-)
I am sure you will not be surprised if I tell you that I love movies, hence the name “Filmpalast”. A space for emotions. An intimate place. A place that gives you the opportunity to be alone and yet be together with other people.
Or make out with someone special.
A room for adventures. A retreat for souls. A place to have a great laugh and/or to scare the living shit out of you.
Hopefully one or several of these will happen to you when you come see a show or have a look at my photography.
“Filmpalast” is music and photography.
I don’t give a fuck about genres.
I grew up with the music my dad would listen to:
Elvis. Chuck Berry. Freddy Quinn.
While my mum adored Beethoven. Mahler. Udo Jürgens.
With these versatile influences what can you expect?
In 1999 “Filmpalast” started out as a danceable electronic act.
Honestly, I didn’t know what I was doing. How could I? I had been playing the guitar and bass in bands from kissing age on...
Just to name a few: Mach!. King Candy. Motorsheep. Bandaloop. Hoelderlin.
Anyway, people liked it and I ended up having the pleasure to play at festivals like Roskilde. This is the part where I should lie about losing my record deal.
Yup, I lost it. You know how it is: Hard times.
By that time I stumbled over a SLR camera and I found that taking photographs is like composing music only with your eyes. Or like cooking. The music changed to more broken beat Electronica. It’s around that time I realized that I hadn’t used guitars on any of my own records for about 4 years.
Basically my plan is and has always been pretty much travelling the world, meeting inspiring people, play music with and/or for people I meet and bring back photos that express more than the obvious, more the eye can catch with only one glimpse.
I have travelled to Japan, North America and enjoyed the inexhaustible diversity of Europe playing and taking pictures. Every now and then when I came home drunk I would dare singing and playing on my acoustic guitar. It took me three years to find the balls to play in front of friends. They liked it and so I tried singing without being drunk.
So I found myself again sitting on the couch singing and playing rather than waste time starring at some screens and this has also changed my life.
“Birth Of The Perfectly Known Stranger”, my 3rd full-length album, came out in 2008. Basically it’s all about one acoustic guitar, one voice and 11 songs.
Everything was recorded live within 2 days and I felt a bit like being naked.:-)
During Fall and Winter 2008 and Spring 2009 I played more than 70 shows and also exhibited my photography. I also had the chance to take pictures of great artists, concerts and weddings.
Only the other day I went to wedding and took pictures...
... and ended up having a drink...
... and playing a few songs...
... guess that is all it takes sometimes...:-)
