Finchhatten produces water-proof, rough and straightforward house music. He merges vinyl samples, voice snippets, guitar recordings and hardware synths combining club feeling with the structures of classic songwriting. He prefers recording hardware equipment over software instruments while generating sounds that reflect the unique not reproducable recording situation. He sometimes likes to make this production process transparent by leaving certain sounds and recorded material raw and unprocessed. From sparkling to lofi his productions are noticeably dry, tight and feature twisted drum programming.
"(…) I like tracks that combine dry club sound and repetitive loops with interesting vocal lines or classic pop-song structures. For me, house music is all about sound, but also arrangement and harmonies. So, on the one hand I may like a track just because of the drum sounds used. On the other hand sound does not really matter if the singer or the arrangement is good. Since the combination of house and pop can end up quite cheesy it’s a challenge to avoid stereotypes, but it’s also very rewarding if it works out. I try to beat the odds and extract the good things out of both approaches. Everyone knows the magic moments of music, when you get goosebumps. I get them at moments when club feeling meets the mathematics of good songwriting on a good sound system. I think I’ll always be into house music just because of that … for the beats and for the hooks (...)”
“(…) I like it when you can hear how a track was made when you listen to it. Both, as a listener and as a producer I’ve always been interested in the “making of”, whether it is a Beatles or a Daft Punk song. Knowing how it's done may draw off some of the magic of a track but adds other interesting aspects. I like the idea of removing some of the music’s magic and turn it into something that adds up to the track in a different way (...)”
Berlin-based producer Finchhatten started making music in the 90ties playing the guitar and drawing MIDI notes. In 2000 he was a founding member of the producer team and electronic live band Konsens. In the following years they were known for their club and outdoor parties, ever changing band constellations and variety of guest musicians contributing actively to Berlin's music and art scene.
Finchhatten has released various records on Konsens (KR001 2004, Jazz Remixes 2005, Frontlight 2006, Honey FM 2007), Phonector (Zeitlupe 2005, HSR 2007), 2much (Fort Knox 2004) and Stereohype. After a calmer period he recently started off with a Remix for Paul Frick’s ‘The Camouflage’ on Klamauk.
His solo works also include a DoLP of 50 guitar songs, scores for the short film series Goody O by Aron Kitzig for the 48 Hour Film Festival 2008 in Berlin (Paperbag Man) and recordings for different art projects, commercial labels such as SF by Peer Kriesel and even for a fashion show.
Finchhatten's many bootleg and also some released remixes of Cassius, Jamie Lidell, M.I.A., old jazz classics and 80ties one hit wonders have gained him some attention. Strangely enough, he actually won one of the many remix competitions these days remixing Tahiti 80's ‘Changes’. So this German remix of a French band appeared on a Japanese compilation released by Levi's...
Finchhatten’s co-operations worth mentioning are the production of the first Konsens Records album ‘001’, the cooperation with Paul Frick on the full length HipHop album ‘HSR’ and the EP ‘Frontlight’ featuring singer Grey Cloud, the indie rock album ‘Lofi Love’ together with Sebastian Risi and co-operations with Lance Gamble, Vincent Grey and singers like Francine and K. Susewind.
