Fine Print, consisting of Ian Morrison & Ian Fuller, met in high school back in Villa Park, IL circa 1995. They discovered drum & bass when they started going to raves in the Chicago area around that same time. Highly influenced by local DJ’s such as Danny the Wildchild and Phantom 45, Morrison purchased his first set of 1200’s at age 17 and the two of them started practicing constantly and eventually, started to play local raves and DnB events. The records that influenced them the most during those days were the tracks on Global Thang, Playaz and Full Cycle. Around 2002-2003 the rave scene in Chicago came to a screeching halt due to the “Anti-rave Ordinance” led by Mayor Richard Daley. The Ian’s lost touch and went their separate ways when Morrison left Villa Park but during their time apart both became interested in production. Morrison started experimenting with trackers and eventually moved on to Reason while Fuller used Acid. Morrison moved back to the Villa Park area in2007 and the two of them started hanging out again. Morrison showed Fuller the hip hop beats he had done and Fuller was impressed. It was at that point Fuller asked Morrison if he would be interested in teaming up to make some DnB beats. Morrison agreed and they formed Fine Print.
Finding no scene for jump up in the Chicago area they turned to the internet to try and meet likeminded musicians from around the world. In late November 07 they finished the rough mix on their first track “Rebel Tek” and put together a Myspace page. After some proper Myspace whoring DJ SS took notice of Rebel Tek and contacted them and Fine Print sent him the track. DJ SS started playing Rebel Tek out and was interested in putting it out on Formation. Fine Print agreed to do the release but, due to their lack of experience with production at that time, they were unable to nail the sound that SS wanted. Rather than become discouraged they became determined to perfect their craft and continued to make tunes, each time upping the bar a little bit. Around then Morrison met Jeff “Mischief” Chapman out of Toronto, Canada (Mischief & Mayhem and Cyntax Error Records) and they started playing each other’s beats out. The Toronto junglists took notice of the Fine Print tunes in Mischief & Mayhem’s sets and eventually Toronto Favorites DJ Brockout and Stickbubbly started playing Fine Print beats as well. In late 2008 UK Producer/DJ Jayline relocated to Toronto and noticed Fine Print’s tune “Reaper” being dropped in sets. Jayline got in touch with Fine Print and picked up the tunes “Reaper” and “Off the Grid” for his label Useless Plaztix. Jayline took time to teach Fine Print how to mix their tunes down proper which helped them define their hard hitting style. In November of 2008 Chapman brought Fine Print to Canada to play United Fronts. Fine Print played to a packed house and killed them. They continue to return to the Toronto area on a frequent basis. With Fine Print becoming more confident in their tunes they started sending them to more people for an opinion. They sent their tune Space Madness to Jaydan to see if they could maybe strike up a dialog. Jaydan’s response to the track was positive and he encouraged them to send him their beats as they complete them. In March of 2009 Jaydan contacted them saying that he had been dropping Fine Print tunes quite a bit in sets. He asked if they would be interested in being exclusive artists on his label Smoking Riddims. Fine Print accepted the offer with great enthusiasm. Their first release “Hektic” will be featured with a yet to be determined Jaydan track. Their tunes are grimy and hard hitting. When asked to describe their style Fine Print no longer call themselves jump up.
Fine Print is Grime Step.
