About me: Recession? What recession? Guitar maker Freddie Fisher isn't letting some economic crisis get in the way of the launch of his custom guitar business. In fact, his fledgling company, Fisher Guitars, will unveil their very first instrument on April 18 when Fisher presents a handcrafted 10-string guitar to Mastodon guitarist Brent Hinds at the Coachella Music Festival in Indio, CA.
Hinds—whose Grammy-nominated, progressive metal band has a massive worldwide following—worked extensively with Fisher to design the one-of-a-kind mahogany instrument, featuring custom made Fisher pickups, a unique 10 string configuration, neck-through-body design, and a high-gloss, green-silver-black-gray sunburst finish. The guitar is valued at $3,500.
Interestingly, Fisher — a professional musician since the age of 18—only recently decided to pursue a career as a full-time luthier. He says he’s shocked by the rapid-fire progress their Salem, OR-based company has recently experienced. “Jan. 16 is when this whole thing started…and now we’re going public with our first guitar on Apr. 18 at Coachella,” says Fisher. “It’s just taken off.”
In June, Fisher says his company will take out full page ads in Guitar World, Bass Player Magazine and Revolver. Fisher Guitars’ next creation will be a jazz-style custom bass with a tobacco-burst seafoam green finish, which will be presented to Jon Kindler of metalcore group The Chariot. The company will continue to offer the Brent Hinds signature guitar for $3,500 (or $2,000 for a six string version), or customers can contact the company and custom design their own guitar creation.
Despite his newcomer status in the world of custom instrument crafting, Fisher is completely confident in the quality of his products. “We’re making road worthy guitars that are the best.”
