In 1999, with the announcement of a football program at Florida International University, spearheaded by Miami Dolphins legend Don Strock, members of the academic heirarchy proposed the creation what would become another proud tradition at FIU - a marching band After a year of preparations and hard work, on August 29th, 2002 at 6:30 P.M., Dr. Greg Martin, Director of the Golden Panther Band, called the band to attention, and introduced to FIU a force to be reckoned with: the Band of the Sun.
Since the fall of 2002, the Golden Panther Band has already broken perceptions and realized many great expectations. Unlike other college bands in the United States, the Golden Panther Band performs an average of five different shows throughout its marching season. It has performed all away from its home in Miami, most of the time as the exhibition component to marching competitions in Florida. The Golden Panther Band has also performed locally in various community events including in local parades and opening events.
