Jaye Allison's Philly TAP Challenge '08 "ON FIRE!"
Tap dance has a rich and full history in America. Its roots run deepest in the city of Philadelphia. Due to the recent loss of such tap greats as Gregory Hines, the world famous Nicholas Brothers and Philly’s own LaVaughn Robinson, we are swiftly losing much of the genre’s living history. So it is more important now than ever to pass on that history while nurturing the up-and-comers, innovators and current living legends. Few believe in this philosophy more than Philly’s own Jaye Allison, who brought the City of Brotherly/Sisterly Love the fifth installment of her Philly Tap Challenge “On Fire!!!”
The weekend-long dance festival, running from June 19-21, 2008, offered workshops in a variety of tap styles, alongside flamenco, hip-hop, swing classes and tap history. But major highlights of the festival are the two nights of performances. Friday night’s show focused more on the young tappers, hoofers and hip hoppers that represent the talent of tomorrow. Students from dance schools all over the region shared their skills and their stage with established performers in the genres of flamenco, swing and hip hop as well as hometown favorite Germaine Ingram and the Philadelphia premiere of the 2nd Generation Silver Belles.
Saturday night’s show was charged with the energy of such celebrity tap artists as Jason Samuels Smith, Chloe Arnold, Dormeshia Sumbry-Edwards and Dianne “Lady Di” Walker among others taking the audience to what other dancers affectionately referred to as “tap church.” The crucial element of both nights, of course is the festival’s namesake, “The Challenge”. Brian Davis was crowned Philly Tap Idol while Jessica Gersony earned the title of Philly Teen Tap Idol.
Thanks to this fabulous festival, not only will tap’s history not be forgotten, but will continue to be written!
