Influences

Some Personal Bass Heroes: Bruce Thomas, Paul McCartney, Paul Chambers, Bill Black, Ray Brown, Willie Dixon, John Paul Jones, Chuck Rainey, Graham Maby, Colin Moulding, Ron Carter, Flea, Bootsy Collins, Noel Redding, James Jamerson

Other Musical Influences: Johnny Burnette, Gene Vincent, Elvis Presley (mostly when he was younger, less crazy and less fat), Aimee Mann, Louis Jordan, Bill Haley, Chuck Berry, XTC, The Beatles, Spoon, Joe Jackson, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Ray Charles, The Blasters, Carl Perkins, The Pretenders, The Specials, The Clash, Elliot Smith, The Cavedogs, Radiohead, Tom Petty, The Kinks, Steely Dan, The Who, Wilco, The Meters, etc etc

Fellow Musicans Who Have Influenced My Approach to Playing: Jon Shain, Mel Melton, Max Drake, John Currie, Bill Newton, Evans Nicholson, Rick Olivarez, David Quick, The Shods...and pretty much everyone else I've played with over the years.

Stuff That I'm Listening to A Lot Lately: Beck, Hollywood Fats, T-Bone Walker, Otis Rush, Gatemouth Brown, Lucinda Williams, Calexico, Los Lobos, Wayne Freakin' Hancock, Alvin Lee (the amazing In Tennessee album that came out in '04)

Sounds LikeImagine if Chris Squire and Geddy Lee had a baby. Wow, that'd be one ugly-ass kid. And I'd sound nothing like him. I play whatever fits the situation. Yeah, that's it: I like playing understated stuff that supports the song.

   About F.J.
It seems that MySpace isn't really set up for freelance musician types like me, so I'll make this up as I go along
  • I play the bass. I currently play electric bass and doghouse bass with Mel Melton and The Wicked Mojos, Jon Shain, Dave Quick and a few others when time permits.
  • I've been fortunate to play with some excellent bands and musicians over the years. Here's a few that I can think of from off the top of my head: Jon Shain, Mel Melton, Edsel 500, Dave Quick, John Saylor, The Shods, The Invaders, The Fall City Kings, Matt Hill, Dave Kepford, Taz Halloween, Glory Fountain, The Storyville Skinners, Tres Chicas
  • I occasionally play out with my own band, Edsel 500. We play a lot of the great old rock and rockabilly tunes (as inspired by my stint with The Invaders while I was living up in the Boston area), with some of our own material mixed in. We play a lot of parties, swing dances, weddings, car shows, bike ralleys and all that sort of stuff (and the occasional club gig). We're all pretty busy with other projects so we don't do much in the way of writing new tunes; for now we'll happily settle for the guilty pleasure of borrowing tunes from Elvis, Johhny, Carl, Chuck, Louis and the rest.
  • By day, I am a self-employed graphic designer for print and the web. Gotta support the music habit somehow.

Rock and roll is the music of the Devil, as evidenced by the red light that mysteriously surrounded you, you band whore.

Fantastic set last night. Sorry I didn't run up front and heckle as I normally would have, but all that sitting -- it freaked me out, man!!! And sorry I missed the party at Dave's, too, but I had to crash with a friend close to the venue or I never would have made it home.
