Live music, emergent beneficial technologies, good Texas and Louisiana food, a good mystery, track and field and other sports with passion, walking with God, and thought-provoking books, plays, movies, and other creative expressions of the best people have to offer.
Music
Lifelong favorites -- Neil Young, Van Morrison, Richie Furay and Roger (Jim) McGuinn, Bob Wills (who made music more fun?), Emmylou Harris (all the way back to Emergency and the Red Fox Inn), Jorma Kaukonen and John Fahey, the Seldom Scene, Annie Herring, the late Keith Green (what life energy he had!), and Randy Stonehill (who closed down our club the SonShine Inn in 1981).
Today - Just read my blog and you will find out.
Movies
The Lord of the Rings (all three movies); Map of the Human Heart (1993); Raintree County (Elizabeth Taylor at her best); House of Flying Daggers; Glory; The Searchers; and for pure pleasure, Flashback (1990), The Princess Bride, and Goonies -- plus (after all, this IS Austin) Dazed and Confused.
Television
Lost, Austin City Limits (most of the time), Miami Vice (because it pioneered using contemporary music and the new approach to visual TV art), and (guilty pleasure) Alias. Plus the old black and white Perry Mason stuff and Rawhide (with Clint Eastwood).
Books
CS Lewis, JRR Tolkien, and Stephen Lawhead plus anything by Andrew Murray.
Famous Long Ago, Ray Mungo (covers my days with the Washington Free Press and Liberation News Service).
Attacking Faulty Reasoning, T. Edward Damer (this book should embarrass nearly everyone in politics today).
With Justice for All. John Perkins (my personal favorite among all the civil rights pioneers).
The White Man's Burden, William Easterly.
We Wish To Inform You That Tomorrow We Will Be Killed With Our Families, Philip Gourevitch (Rwanda's genocide and the guilt of the West).
Heroes
Nancy Flanakin -- for loving me. My daughters Payton, Genevieve, Susan (every day I miss her), and Melody -- and everyone who is learning the grace of living.
About me: Duggan Flanakin is a music lover, journalist, and veteran of the Sixties who is also a visionary for human freedom in the developing world. Native Texan (and proud of it!), longtime resident of our nation's capital, and lover of my late darling Nancy! [Photo by Winker!]

The all new, all original CRUELTY arrives Tuesday, July 29, and I'll celebrate with a show at Austin's legendary Cactus Cafe. It's free, aside from the $15 you'll certainly want to spend on the CD. Raina Rose opens at 8:30 pm, then Southpaw Jones performs in his finest suit, and nothing will ever be the same.
