The Flashing Astonishers created a cloudy-sounding, beautiful racket that didn’t necessarily fit under any genre you aspire to cast upon them. Their protocol of avoiding any genre-clique or fashionable scene made them unique. The noise they made is a hybrid of many various influences, starting with indie rock steeped in tradition & affection, plus some post-rock and shoegazer material, mixing with punk, lo-fi & spacerock.
2002’s visceral album “On Involuntary Bliss” (on Substandard - New Red Archives Records out of San Francisco) was their best achievement. The disc was stocked with some fresh yet vague pop songs for lovers’ scorned, and layers of grinding & soothing guitars. "To be on the same label that launched Samiam is perfect," Yeti said at the time. Previously, the band put out 2 albums that zine-land critics seemed to like a bit, 1998’s “Everything Is Gonna Stop”, and 2000’s “The Star Off Machine,” both on Yeti’s label Koala Records. Most of their recorded output occured with Doug White at Watchmen Studios in Lockport, NY just minutes from Niagara Falls.
They played numerous shows with bands a bit more familiar to wider audiences, including the likes of Guided By Voices, Saves The Day, Swirlies, H2O, Nada Surf, Radio 4, Cropduster, Longwave, Electric Frankenstein, Whippersnapper, Selby Tigers, Ultimate Fakebook, & more.
