As kids, Ben Whiteley and Suzy Wilde used to play hide-and-seek backstage at folk festivals. Growing up, they started revisiting the festivals as members of their parents' bands. Now in their 20's, Wilde and Whiteley have reunited as FLASHLIGHT RADIO- an indie-folk-rock outfit that combines their musical roots with new influences of their generation. Emerging with full force into the Canadian music scene, they are quickly gaining praise and recognition from fans and critics alike. The music is a dynamic blend of textures, tones, soaring vocals and melodious riffs: a perfect balance between delicate melodies and lush, energetic arrangements. Wilde and Whiteley execute simplified versions of these sound-scapes as a duo, but often call on additional players to fill out their sound in live show settings. Their debut self-titled EP has been hailed as a fresh take on modern roots music that "tugs at your heartstrings from start to finish" (NOW Magazine). It features guest appearances by Liam Titcomb, Christine Bougie, Jaron Freeman-Fox, Maddy Wilde, Ken Whiteley, Nancy White, Dan Stadnicki and many more.
Emotionally-charged and sonically rich, the EP guides the listener through stories of childhood, first love, saying goodbye, a city that keeps growing and restless hearts that long for the country. It has been well received by listeners everywhere, thanks in part to the continuous support and regular air-play from CBC Radio 1 and 2. To mark the end of a great year, FLASHLIGHT RADIO was included in CBC's Mark Rheaume’s 2009 Best Of Ontario Music. Wilde and Whiteley come together to form a dynamic and well balanced duo with an album that goes above and beyond what one might expect in a debut. With a loyal fan base that keeps on growing FLASHLIGHT RADIO has what it takes to make serious waves in Canadian Music.

I recently made a very bad decision to get behind the wheel after having had a few drinks. I was pulled over and it quickly escalated in to not only a drunk driving charge but also an assault and a resisting arrest. I have never had a drunk driving before, nobody was hurt, and there was no accident. As a result I have lost my license which has had an effect in not being able to provide for my family, as driving is essential in my line of work. I have to pay a large fine. I'll have to go to jail and buy special insurance to get my license back. Also I will have to go to alcohol awareness classes that cost almost $700.00. Altogether it will cost thousands that I dont have. My family will pay for my bad choice. I wrote this new song "The drunk driver song" to help make people aware of the price you will have to pay for drinking and driving. I was not a criminal, nor a bad person, but because my stupidity I am now both. Please do not drink and drive! If you can please take just a few minutes and give the song a listen I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you. JG JOHNSON
That was a great set at The Drake. What better way to make a musical statement by being included in CBC Mark Rheaume’s 2009 Best Of Ontario Music. Bonded by a longstanding friendship, Flashlight Radio deliver an alluring blend of immaculate roots-tinged folk, deft storytelling, and vocals of sweet fragile beauty that take you to another place. Heartfelt treasures for the acoustically inclined steeped in feeling and purity.
Impressive review of the CD in Now Magazine, 'Suzy Wilde is the driving force behind local indie folk outfit Flashlight Radio. The daughter of celebrated songwriter and CBC favourite Nancy White and older sister to Spiral Beach’s Maddy Wilde, she’s also a member of local folkies StoneFox. Here, along with accomplished bassist Ben Whiteley, she targets the pop-centric singer/songwriter set and delivers seven strong country-tinged tunes'
Thanks for havin us perform with you last night. Your songs are going to be in my head for weeks! Peace and love - Jack PS can you put up this gorgeous fresh green wallpaper all over my house perhaps?
That was a great set at The Drake. An alignment of musicianship and a heroine of song, a dynamic folk-roots trio featuring Liam Titcomb as guest drummer. Ben Whiteley’s guitar-playing is imbued with rich tones, concise and soothing, accompanied by the sweetly-powerful vocals of Suzy Wilde singing with a honeyed sense of beauty. Incredibly personal, inspiring, a rousing song of salvation in the heart of Toronto.
