About me:
We're the hand-decorated shirts that Pete Shelley of Buzzcocks (no 'the') has been proudly wearing on tour in the US, and we wanted to tell you how we came to be made.
We have been made by a lady artist, working from the North of England.
We were sourced from charity shops carefully selected for their ethical suitability.
Our designs are made using an original and innovative stencilling technique (our designer can’t hands-on-heart say ‘unique’, but she doesn’t know of anyone else currently using the same method). The text is traced onto transparent sticky-back plastic. However, in some cases, Fablon ('"The" sticky-back plastic', its makers proclaim) was used, which is opaque. This meant that the lettering had to be traced carefully by hand onto the film. This takes more time, but the resulting stencil is more robust and can be re-used more times than the ones on transparent film.
The *inside* of the letters was carefully cut out, using sharp hairdressing scissors (a lucky purchase from a pound shop). The adhesive film was stuck onto the fabric and fabric paint carefully stippled on.
Our decorative labels have been taken from vintage and current-day clothing, sometimes without the owner’s consent. Most of the ‘designer’ labels (Versace, etc) are from counterfeits bought outside the UK.
The stencils are fragile: they are prone to warping, as well as losing their adhesiveness, if repositioned. They can only be used once on fabric, but have later been used successfully on canvas. After this final use the stencils are laminated, producing a rather pleasing poster, which accompanies the related canvas.
Each shirt takes many hours of hard work, dedication and utter devotion.
The canvases are in various sizes, the largest being 1m square, and are influenced by the work of Andy Warhol and Dr Malcolm Garrett as well as the current Michael-Landy inspired ‘Flatpack’ design.
We're looking forward to meeting our canvas counterparts when they end up being exhibited. In the meantime we're just happy touring with the greatest live band in the history of modern music. And it's great being this close to Pete!
