This festival will showcase the unique cultural mix, as well as the history of the neighborhood, to the greater Nashville area through a diverse mix of music, arts, and food.
Hands Together In Flatrock1st Annual Music and Arts Festival at Coleman Park May 24, 2008 11am-8pm
In an effort to encourage interaction, greater understanding and
tolerance among the older residents and the new immigrant families of
Flatrock, members of the Flatrock community have come together to
present a one day, family oriented festival. The Hands Together in
Flatrock 1st Annual Music and Arts Festival will feature a unique mix
of music, arts and cuisine ˆ all of which have been selected with the intent to represent the rich, cultural diversity of the Flatrock
community. Among the many performers slated to appear are: Nashville's underground darling Tommy Womack. Womack, formerly of the late, great Government Cheese and The Bis-Quits, has established
himself as a fan and critic favorite in the folk/rock realm due to
his artistic and often unpredictable sets of original Womack
compositions. Hit-writer, and artist in her own right, Irene Kelley joins the musical line up with her catalog of hits: I'm A Little Bluer Than
That (Alan Jackson), You Are A Rock And I Am A Rolling Stone (Carl
Jackson), Love Can't Ever Get Better Than This (Ricky Skaggs/Sharon
White) and more. Adding their blend of Latin sounds and reggae beats is Trova Urbana with Latin rocker Danny Salazar. Their offerings are in both Spanish
and English, with "breathless melodies over insanely catchy rhythms." Other performers include: singer/songwriter Austin Cunningham, Nashville's premiere 60's and 70's Tribute Band Boomerang, The Nashville School of the Arts Bluegrass Ensemble, Baba Musa and Nature's Drummers, Huseyin Arslan, Orchid Sicye, with other acts still TBA. A great deal of the art component of the festival will be provided by the children who attend the schools in and around the Flatrock community. A "clothes line art show" will border the perimeter of the park, showcasing the artistic talents of the local children. An area of the park will also be dedicated to interactive activities for the children in attendance, provided by The Frist Center, The Country Music Hall of Fame (who will also provide an "Instrument Petting Zoo" so that children can try out instruments) and The Nashville Zoo, who will host a special frog exhibit, as May is "Frog Month." Other featured artists will include The Nashville Drug Court and the art that they created especially for the festival, Jennifer Utterback, known for her abstract, mixed media style and The Lost Boys of Sudan (refugees from the civil war in Sudan), who will be showcasing masks that they created for the festival. Other artists include: Linda Coulter, Donny Matthew Smutz, Danny Holman, Lindsay Starr, Cassandra Stewart, with other artists still TBA. Keeping with the theme of representing the many cultural facets of
the Flatrock community, the dining fare at the festival will be as diverse as the community itself, with offerings from many local favorites including: Istanbul Restaurant, Paletas Lichita, The Dog of Nashville, Taquiera San Juan, Knights of Columbus, The Dairy King and
many more. The Hands Together In Flatrock Music and Arts Festival focuses on the
specific community of Flatrock and promotes interaction, greater understanding and tolerance among the residents of Flatrock, the idea and the message behind the festival has already reached beyond this unique, culturally diverse community into the greater Nashville area.
Other organizations now involved in the festival in support of diversity are: The Country Music Hall of Fame, The Nashville Zoo, Our
Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, Flatrock Heritage Foundation, The Exchange Club Family Center and many more. The festival has also
garnered support from important sponsors such as: Metro Arts, Vanderbilt Medical Center, The Nashville Scene, The Frist Foundation, Kroger and more. Attendees will experience the best of music, art and cuisine that this diverse community has to offer. The Hands Together In Flatrock 1st Annual Music and Arts Festival will take place May 24, 2008 from 11:00am-8:00pm in Coleman Park.
