flinders is the musical brainchild of a Galway native, Philip Flynn.
An avid fan of music from his youth, flinders finds his influence in elements of both grunge and brit-pop, from the sumptuous lyrics and sounds of Elbow to more recent acoustic-guitar based music (with integrity) such as the beautiful songs of the (late) Elliot Smith and Iron and Wine.
Also, more avant-garde records recently released by Germany's The Notwist and the all-conquering Radiohead has helped enormously in the development of flinders attempts to balance the use of technology, distortion and melody.
Flinders blends looped vocals and guitar parts, pulsating rhythms, hypnotic baselines and a soaring lead vocal line to create a unique sound.
He has honed his ability as a live performer with a slew of live performances in Ireland and has now expanded his act to include two fellow musicians to create a fuller live show. He, however, continues to perform solo on occasion.
Performing his work live has proved to be a unique challenge to the musician himself, and requires all of the usual characteristics of a live performance together with pin-point timing and accurate harmonization.
Having conceived the idea of flinders, he teamed up with Les Keye (former member of the Wilde Oscar and a man who has produced and remixed numerous Irish artists in recent years).
Together, in 2007 they recorded "The Ground Floor E.P" over four days, incorporating a mix of rock and electro beats over looped vocals, creating an entirely fresh sounding style of music.
Following the self-release of this E.P, through independent record stores in Ireland and digitally all over the world, flinders and his music received much critical praise in both Ireland and abroad, receiving airplay on both independent and national airwaves, the BBC and American Radio and culminating with a recorded live session for 2FM and a slot supporting The Young Knives in Whelans in 2008.
RCA/Columbia records also showed interest in the E.P, finding time to create a short video to go with the song and which was featured on their website.
Having played extensively in support of the E.P, flinders went to ground in order to finish demos for his debut album and to begin recording, which took place over June and July of 2008 and featuring the wonderful talents of Kim Porcelli ..o.
The album was mastered by Liam Grant and is now set for release in September 2008. Flinders will be playing live dates in Ireland in October and November to support the launch of the album, entitled See Saw Still.
Flinders is also currently available for support bookings throughout Ireland and the U.K by contacting him through this website, his myspace or by emailing flinders@eircom.net
