Flint: A City Of...'s Blurbs |
About me:
Flint: A City Of... is a project devoted to changing the hearts and minds of the people living in and around Flint, Michigan.
This city developed a bad reputation due to hardships that we faced in our past. General Motors abandoned us and we saw an increase in unemployment and crime. We became the poster child for post-industrial, economically depressed towns. Michael Moore (bless his heart) documented our misery. The nation wept for us. We threw ourselves the biggest pity party the world has ever seen. And by focusing on all those negative things, we continued to attract even more negativity into our community until all those bad feelings began to hover over the city like a cloud of toxic smog. Have you ever felt it?
BUT WE HAVE THE POWER TO CHANGE THAT TODAY. The loss of our factories means that Flint has lost its old identity and needs to create a new one. Our city is like a blank slate, and we have the freedom to decide what our future is going to be! A college town? A thriving art community? It's up to YOU.
Let's start by getting rid of all this negativity. Instead of badmouthing Flint, let's start talking about all the good things that we have. Let's take advantage of our resources--the parks, the universities, the cultural center, the churches, the charities. Let's begin to be more optimistic people because like Gandhi said, if we want to change the world, we have to start with OURSELVES. So instead of feeling sorry for yourself and focusing on everything you don't have, try making a list of all the good things that happened to you this week. Try doing it every week. Not only will you start to notice all the beauty and the good around you, your positive attitude will begin to rub off on the people around you and who knows what could happen then?

Who I'd like to meet:
We want to meet people who love Flint and are ready for change. We're always looking for volunteers to help spread information and participate in "happenings" around town. Also, please contact us if you have any suggestions on how we can expand our efforts to reach more people--in fact, if you have an idea for a flyer or a website or a video, go ahead and make it! This is a grassroots movement that belongs to you the people, so feel free to take it in whatever direction you think it needs to go!
We also want to network with the other wonderful businesses organizations that are dedicated to making Flint a better place to live--now! There's Flint Club, the Creative Alliance, Red Ink Studios, the Mott Park Neighborhood Association, the Farmer's Market, the United Way, and so many other groups that are driven by wonderful, passionate people who really care about this city. Thank you!
