Flixton Band are pleased to announce that they now have appointed Mr Iain McKnight as their new MD.
In accepting the position, Iain said "I am very pleased to accept the invitation to be the Musical Director of the Flixton Band. Having played with the Band on a number of occasions, I know that the Band members are focused and ambitious enough to really progress further as a contest and concert ensemble. The Band has in its ranks a number of excellent players who have experienced banding at the higher levels, and the will to succeed is quite evident by the excellent rehearsals and recent concert we enjoyed together . In passing, I would like to thank all my friends at Lostock Hall Band, where I have been Musical Director since last October. I have really enjoyed my time there, and would like to wish them all the very best for their continued success and progress. "
Iain's conducting debut with Flixton Band, at Vernon Park, Stockport, July 2007.
Michael Rowley, Flixton Band Manager added "Flixton Band is very excited to be working with Iain. With his talent and enthusiasm, and our hard work and commitment, we are looking forward to a very successful future, building on our recent excellent contest results. Making the most of Iain's experience at the highest level, the Band is also anticipating an exciting and varied concert program. We are very much looking forward to what we believe will be a winning partnership.

More about the band
At one time, Flixton was a few mud huts, with a boat offering transport across the River Mersey to Cheshire. It is now part of Greater Manchester.
Flixton has had a band in various shapes and forms for quite a while now, (over a hundred years). Less than five years ago, the band had almost disintegrated, being down to six members. Ewan Campbell did some good work, and when Kevin Gibbs took over in 2004, he took on a growing band.
What he has done in three years is remarkable. Flixton Band is once more on the map in the local community, and further afield, playing regular concerts locally, and Bandstands as far away as Scarborough.
Talking of 'Bandstand', this is the title of Flixton Band's first CD! A selection from this can be heard from the music player above.
Allowing for the usual migration, Flixton maintains virtually a full band. Contest results since Kevin took over in 2004 have been phenomenal. Flixton have taken part in nineteen contests. Out of these, they have been placed 4th twice, 3rd four times, 2nd three times, and 1st six times! This has included qualifying for the Nationals in September 2006.
In twelve of these contests, they were 2nd Section
At Buxton they won the 3rd Section by playing The Plantagenets by E Gregson, and beating the next placed band by 2 clear points!
The last contest was at Kirkby Lonsdale where the band walked away with FIVE of the trophies on offer there, a bitter sweet moment as this was the last appearance by MD Kevin Gibbs. Kevin has decided to move onto pastures new and what a fitting way to leave the band! Flixton Band would like to thank Kevin for the last 3 years he has spent with them, and wish him good luck in his future projects.
UPDATE!!! HAPPY 18TH BIRTHDAY KATIE!!
Katie Myers followed her big (and occasionally hairy) brother Andy to Flixton Band, joining in the Autumn of 2005. Like several band members she used Stockport Schools excellent bands as a stepping stone to playing in Trafford's Premier Band. She is a valuable asset to the back row cornet section, and tops up the glamour stakes there which dipped slightly when Nikki the Flugel player defected to sit with the Horn section. As well as playing the cornet , Katie lists her hobbies as playing the piano and socialising. While we have yet to hear her tinkling the ivories, all of the band can vouch for her energetic enthusiasm on the dance floor at Pontins and Butlins!! She also has a fondness for bubble-wrap!
Typical Katie-ness
Short hemlines, withering looks, and having lots of fun!!

I would like to thank Flixton Band for give me a heartpulling send off last night (I promised myself I would not shed tears after sunday). The flowers are beautiful and so far have escaped attention of my kittens. It was a shame I didn't leave you with a bigger bang at the weekend by qualifing for the nationals but I will miss you all and will carry many memories with me to Cambridge. I will visit as often as I can. Hope to see you at Whit Friday (if not before). Keep in touch.
Love, Kisses and Hugs to you all
