Ghosts of Floodtown
By today it is too late; our future is already fucked. The gap between the very rich and the very poor is already too great, and it only gets bigger from here. As the years pass nations will mean less and less; economics will become the common language between men. When the war starts, flags will signify only the soil that the corporate interests behind them rest upon. And after the war, which will last mere weeks, there won't be any need for flags at all. A new economic union will be formed, a Global Union.
Soon after, the foundations for the first corporate arcologies will be laid. Some places will resist, chief among them the former United States, no longer united, no longer states. Sanctions will be imposed upon rogue areas refusing to enter the Global Union and they will stagnate. The Global Union, however, will move forward at a breath taking pace. Not even the earthquake that will sink what was formerly know as Japan will slow the scientific and economic progress that erupts after borders are forgotten and the globe is united.
Civilization will expand into space, first into inter-orbit communities and then onto the moon. Terraforming our closest stellar relative will prove difficult and the domed terraforming colonies themselves will become the only permanent settlements upon the lunar surface. But plans will be made to terrafrom a different body in our solar system. Back planetside, things will only get better for the rich and worse for the poor.
Corporations, headed from their huge arcologies doting the land, will take care of their own and very little else. Those not affiliated with a major economic body, most of the population, will find themselves without power, without food, and without government. In order to survive they will re-organize into families, into tribes, into gangs. The most successful of the gangs in each area will struggle against one another to become the new governing bodies.
With the consumer base stabilized underneath them once more, the corporations will begin to provide the necessities again and life will go on. Some will enact strict laws; others will allow anarchy to govern, only enforcing the standards of the Global Union. And then, deep inside a research lab, life will take a new turn and the first Artificial human will be crafted from vat grown tissue.
35 years later, the most powerful Artificial ever created will escape from his corporate penthouse and change the world forever.
We are already fucked.
