About me:
In April 2008, thousands of caring and thoughtful individuals from across the state gathered in Fort Lauderdale for the Florida AIDS Walk and demonstrated their commitment to reversing the course of the AIDS epidemic in Florida. One hundred percent of the funds raised went to HIV/AIDS program initiatives in Florida, including testing, a mobile clinic, and the Magic Johnson Healthcare Clinic, newly opened in Miami. In 2009, the Florida AIDS Walk will recruit participants statewide to raise awareness that nearly 125,000 Floridians are living with HIV/AIDS. Proceeds from Florida AIDS Walk 2009 will benefit AIDS Healthcare Foundation, the Pet Project, the Gay and Lesbian Community Center of Greater Fort Lauderdale, and the Broward Human Rights Initiative.

Join us on March 28, 2010 for Florida AIDS Walk beginning at Huizenga Plaza and continuing through downtown and beachfront Fort Lauderdale. Please stay tuned for updates and announcements about AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) initiatives in South Florida at www.FloridaAIDSWalk.org.

AHF Reaches Goal of 100,000 HIV Tests This Year!

AIDS Healthcare Foundation set a goal to test 100,000 people for HIV worldwide by the end of 2009 with most of our efforts focused on doing our part to contribute to AHF’s World AIDS Day Ten Million Tests campaign. While we were busy launching our global LOVE Condoms campaign in July and August, it snuck up on us: we had already reached the 100,000 mark, far ahead of our original goal! Currently, AHF has tested 133,777 for HIV in 2009. Since knowing your status is the first step in fighting the spread of HIV, this is an important goal to have reached.

Testing Hours: Out of the Closet Thrift Store Testing Mon-Sat 12-7 PM and Sun 12-6 PM, 2097 Wilton Drive, Wilton Manors

Nelson Vergel Seminar Huge Success for Red Hispana Florida

AHF Pharmacy, a not-for-profit pharmacy, was happy to have been a part of the hugely successful Long-Term HIV Survival Seminar: "How to Look and Stay Healthy While Living with HIV" at ArtServe Auditorium, sponsored by Red Hispana Florida. Expert guest speaker, Nelson Vergel, was brought in from Texas to speak at the event. Nelson runs a wellness center, Poz Health Support online group, and is a well-regarded author, AIDS activist and lecturer.

Men’s Wellness Center in Fort Lauderdale and Miami

AHF is pleased to be offering a new service to South Florida: Free screening and treatment of HIV and other STDs, as well as a whole battery of sexual health and treatment services in one location. The AHF NorthPoint Men's Wellness Center located at 6405 N. Federal Hwy., Suite 205 in the Imperial Point Hospital Medical Office Building, is now offering free HIV and STD screenings and treatment, as well as treatment for syphilis, gonorrhea and Chlamydia. Hours of service are Monday and Thursday, from 5:00 pm to 7:00 PM. No appointment is necessary.

"As AHF expands its roster of health care services in Florida, we are proud to offer targeted men's wellness services at AHF NorthPoint Healthcare Center in Ft. Lauderdale," said Michael Kahane, AIDS Healthcare Foundation's Bureau Chief, Southern Region. "Like all of the programs offered by AHF's Public Health Division, the Men's Wellness Center is designed to increase awareness, reduce risk and, if necessary, provide linkage to treatment services. It is comprehensive care in one location--a kind of 'one-stop shopping' for all of one's sexual health care needs."

Testing Hours: Men's Wellness Center Testing Mon and Thurs 5-7 PM, 6405 N. Federal Hwy, Ste. 205

Community Announcement

Florida AIDS Walk is accepting requests for proposals for beneficiaries of Florida AIDS Walk from September 1 through October 1, 2009. Please click here to download instructions.

We are a small but mighty group of volunteers who love animals. Our mission is to try to save the many adoptable dogs and cats that are found, abused, abandoned or surrendered, who would otherwise be taken to a kill-shelter. We will not euthanize because the vet bill is anticipated to be exorbitant or if the pet is considered by some, to be too old to be adopted. Click here for more information.

Click on the logos to find out more information about each offer.

Shop at iGive.com. Choose the Florida AIDS Walk as your cause and a portion of the proceeds will be donated directly to the Florida AIDS walk. Choose from hundreds of stores, great prices, shipped to your door, while giving to a great cause. Just make Florida AIDS Walk your cause on iGive.com. Click here for more information.

We are looking for “A Few Good Ticket Sellers” to benefit the Florida AIDS Walk. On October 17 Macy’s will have its annual Shop-For-A-Cause. In addition to being able to purchase tickets at any of our Out of the Closet Thrift Stores, AHF Pharmacies, and Clinics we are looking for Volunteers to man our booth at Macy’s on October 17 as well as selling tickets for the event. Click here for more information.

Remember to donate! Florida AIDS Walk is approaching, and we are now accepting donations! Remember, it's you, the donors who keep this event going year after year. Any amount is greatly appreciated. Please click the button to the left to be redirected to our donation page.

I am participating in the FL AIDS Walk. Please help me raise funds by visiting: http://ahf. convio. net/goto/Nicole_Oviedo. Thank you in advance.

Here is more information:

The past decade has brought life-saving medical advances in the treatment of HIV/AIDS. Unfortunately, this progress comes with a price: a new generation that doesn't know or accept the reality that HIV infection has serious, lifelong consequences... until it's too late. The rate of new HIV infections is skyrocketing, and South Florida leads the nation in new AIDS cases.

I've joined an exciting effort to address the AIDS crisis in my community. I signed up for Florida AIDS Walk, a 10K walk in Fort Lauderdale on Sunday, March 15. Please support my effort to stop the spread of HIV by becoming one of my sponsors. Whatever you can give will make a profound difference.

Your sponsorship contribution will:

-- Fund the expansion of free HIV testing, prevention education and treatment referral right here in Fort Lauderdale and throughout the state of Florida

-- Help support treatment services for more than 10,000 patients in Florida with HIV/AIDS

-- Raise awareness that the battle against AIDS is not over

Please visit my personal fundraising webpage where you can make a secure credit card donation. Your gift to this worthy cause is fully tax-deductible.

Thank you for your support.

Sincerely,

Nicole M.
Oviedo
