MRSA FOUND IN STORE BOUGHT PORK

SEATTLE -- A ground-breaking investigation by KOMO-TV in Seattle has found toxic, life-threatening Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA) bacteria in some pork you might buy at grocery stores.
This drug-resistant bacteria is already responsible for more deaths in this country than AIDS. What makes MRSA so potentially dangerous is the bacteria can make you sick just by touching it.
In spite of the risk, the U.S. Department of Agriculture has resisted testing store-bought pork for the aggressive bacteria. So, in partnership with Fisher Broadcasting stations across the region, KOMO decided to test it themselves.
"MRSA is a very different kind of bacteria," said Dr. Rebecca Goldburg, a biologist with Keep Antibiotics Working.
Last winter, the antibiotic resistant type of staph killed Chris Feden, a healthy 20 year old, when he contracted MRSA-related pneumonia.
"We just thought that we could conquer this with modern medicine," said Feden's father, David.
Three years ago, Puyallup resident Brian Boutte scraped his hip -- a simple, small abrasion. His doctor prescribed antibiotics, but the flesh-eating disease Boutte contracted didn't respond.
"I was running out of time, I was on my last hour -- I was dying," he said, "I was literally dying." Twenty surgeries later, doctors saved Boutte's life, but he lost his leg.
Neither Boutte nor Chris Feden's parents know how they were infected. They're just living with the results.
"I didn't know how serious it would be," Boutte said.
While it can't be said these injuries were caused by contact with pork, the investigation discovered the bacteria in ground pork sold in regional grocery stores.
"It all starts with just one bacteria which you cannot see with your naked eyes," said Dr. Mansour Samadpour, an expert bacterial microbiologist with IEH Laboratories.
A few months ago a University of Iowa study found a virulent strain of MRSA in pigs. But, in spite of that information, no one from the USDA is testing.
"As far as I'm concerned," said Goldburg, "USDA and FDA are kind of asleep at the wheel on this one."
So KOMO News, along with its network of stations in Washington, Idaho, Oregon and California did its own testing. At stores around the region, 97 packages were purchased, divided between ground pork and pork cutlets. All the samples to IEH Laboratories, a USDA-certified lab in Seattle.
The scientists followed standard testing protocols and found MRSA in three different samples; all were ground pork. The positive samples were from purchases made in Oregon, California and Idaho -- three of the four states tested. One of the samples testing positive was purchased in Lewiston.
"The interesting situation here," said Samadpour. "is that now we have something that you would worry about in terms of wound infections in foods."
Like most other bacteria, MRSA will die if it's thoroughly cooked. But unlike E. coli or salmonella, MRSA causes skin infections, so just touching raw pork that has the bacteria could be a problem, according to both Samadpour and Goldburg.
"So that raises the possibility," says Goldburg, "that simply handling meat could potentially give you a very nasty infection."
Canada and several European countries already test pork in grocery stores for MRSA. We contacted the USDA and were told they have no plans for any testing.
"It really disturbs me," said Boutte. "We have enough things out there that we can catch, we don't need any help from other sources, and if the government is not going to be able to step up and help us out - what's the point?"
The National Pork Board just began testing pork in retail markets. Their study won't be finished for another six months, but their preliminary results are similar to KOMO’s: about a three percent positive rate for MRSA. The Pork Board said MRSA is a priority, but they don't know if it's a risk to you.
"Government should not ignore this information," said Goldburg, "I hope it'll be a bit of a wake-up call."
Boutte hopes the wake-up call makes a difference. "I would like them to think about the people that are possibly going to catch this disease and if they are able to prevent those people from catching it then they've saved one more life."
Both the Centers for Disease Control and the Food and Drug Administration were also contacted. The FDA says they have started a small pilot study of raw meat in Washington, D.C., but don't have any results yet and don't know when the study will be finished.
Everyone spoken with stresses that while this information is important, it shouldn't cause anyone to panic or not want to buy pork. Just make sure you use safe food-handling practices with one additional precaution: try not to handle raw pork if you have cuts or abrasions on your hands.

Close to 7 billion people in the world, the entire earth is a blood bath as millions of animals are slaughtered every single day. These animals live in deplorable conditions-confined spaces, diseased, suffering. People don't care. Don't give it a second thought. Most of them are christians too. They think humans are so superior animals don't count; they have no mercy for the suffering. People gorge themselves. And take pleasure tearing into flesh and blood calling it red and juicy. Many have become obese taking pleasure with this orgy of pain and suffering. Some may find that amusing, but it represents untold countless millions of living, breathing, and feeling beings. Animals even know when they are about to be slaughtered. They are smarter than you think. This is the truth behind the meat industry. Please take a few moments to look what you are eating. I know you don't want to see it, but please take a look at what you are buying in the grocery store. And at what cost.
And if you are a christian, ask yourself where is your compassion if you can't feel sorry for a poor helpless animal that also suffers pain and fear. And why should it just be confined to other human beings. Aren't they ALL God's creations? Don't we all eat, sleep, and excrete wastes; and suprise suprise, animals show a LOT of affection and compassion...so I ask you--why confine compassion to just people? Where is your compassion. Or is it a facade. And where does St. Francis of Assisi fit into all of this.
If a person doesn't care about animals, I pray one day they realize their cruelty. I'm afraid of such a person who can be so cold. IT TELLS ME A LOT ABOUT THAT PERSON. Because

no-chicken broth, one quart and 3/4 of another (approximately 4-6 cups)
5-6 oz.tofu, frozen for two weeks and thawed before use
vegan butter
2 T. white flour
6 carrots, peeled and sliced
4 stalks celery, chopped
3 cloves garlic, chopped
1/2 vidalia onion, chopped
4-5 yellow potatoes, peeled and diced
1 12 oz. can peas, or 12 pz. frozen
salt and pepper to taste
bay leaf
1 T.old bay seasoning
phylo dough, thawed, for a quick dinner. or you can make your crust from scratch

Serve with Salad. Both recipes here on my blog and don't forget that glass of white wine. :)

- 1 block of extra-firm tofu, cut into fries
- 1/2 to 1 white onion, sliced
- 1 Tbsp vegetable oil - I love to use sesame oil for this but canola or sunflower works fine, too.
Brown or sauté the above ingredients in a heavy-bottomed frying pan.
When the tofu is golden and crispy on all sides, temporarily remove pan from heat and quickly stir in*:
- 2 Tbsp natural peanut butter
- 2 Tbsp soy sauce
- Juice of 1 lemon
- salt, to taste
- a bit of cayenne, or to taste
Put the pan back on the burner to heat.
Serve on/in pita bread garnished with crispy romaine leaves, spinach leaves, vegan sour cream or soy yogurt.
Pineapple Cocktail (another breakfast idea)
1-14oz can of pineapple chunks, or same amount of fresh pineapple, with juice
fresh ginger root, finely grated, to taste (I usually use a 3/4 inch cube)
1 T of fresh lemon juice
1 T of agave nectar
6 ice cubes, or more
Put all ingredients in a blender and process until the ice is crushed.
Serve immediately.
