THE SINGLE BEST SONG I’VE HEARD FROM A SCOTTISH GROUP IN A VERY LONG TIME

HEAVEN OR LAS VEGAS review Aug 2007

Our latest review of a new Scottish band comes from Glasgow, with Kick to Kill’s new single ‘Quit Tomorrow’.

Quit Tomorrow is the single best song I’ve heard from a Scottish group in a very long time. It starts with a slow thoughtful build up then hits the right tempo at just the right time for just the correct length of time. With strong hints towards Bauhaus, Killing Joke, Jesus and Mary Chain, Kick to Kill almost sound like a Scottish version of ‘I Love You But I’ve Chosen Darkness’. Ok so Kick to Kill aren’t doing anything groundbreaking here, but what they are doing is bloody good. And if these guys can string together eleven tracks as strong as Quit Tomorrow, I’ll be the first one in line to part with hard earned cash for the listening pleasure. The band encapsulates the best elements of gothic, drone and alternative rock.

As for the other two tracks, ‘Acid Rain’, has an opening bass so reminiscent of The Cure in their early days you almost half expect to hear Robert Smith pop up somewhere. It’s certainly a more than decent follow up to ‘Quit Tomorrow’. On my first listen the vocals did seem too overwhelmed by the instruments but on further plays this just seems to blend the elements of the band together more effectively, whether this is by accident or design doesn’t matter, it works. ‘Senses Stripped’ for me is the only track, which doesn’t work. Here Kick to Kill seem to sacrifice the initially ear catching jagged guitars and punchy drums for (and to be fair) unnecessarily repetitive backing vocals which renders what could have been a good song relatively uneventful.

Still, on the evidence of ‘Quit Tomorrow’, Kick To Kill seem to have something many of their peers lack - a good grasp of what they want to sound like, and a good grasp of how to make music we’ll like the sound of. Its gone straight onto my MP3 player and anyone with the savvy to check them out will do the same.

The CD is available to buy at Avalanche Records or better yet directly from their website.

Welcome to FLOWERS IN THE DUSTBIN - a multi media collective.

Record label, fiction publisher, event instigator.

WHAT ARE WE?

Currently...

8 BANDS: Latest signings - The Echo Session, Nevada Base AND She's Hit plus Kick To Kill, Transfer Audio, Kaleidoscope Eyes, Kizzy Star and The Phaetons. 2009 has already seen debut releases from Kizzy Star & Kaleidoscope Eyes... More release dates to be confirmed very soon... sooner than you think!

2 SINGLES: Kizzy Star - 'Out Of Control' (2nd March 2009). We also released the debut single from Kick To Kill (May 2007). 2009 will see some more exciting releases.

1 EP: Kaleidoscope Eyes - 'Entheogen' (9th March 2009).

1 BOOK: 48 THRILLS - A Glasgow Punk Tale. Published April 2007.

EVENTS...

7 IRREGULAR NIGHTS ....

We're invoking the Flowers 5th commandment - 'Repetition Is Boring'. Which means that some of our events will shift venues, shift dates etc. But here's the latest...

THE MELODIC RECESSION - directly inspired by The Echo Session. If you’re going to spend a few quid seeing live bands, we’d recommend The Melodic Recession. No crap bands, no rip off promoters. Launch night is Sat 27th June at Pivo Pivo. The full bill is THE ECHO SESSION, The Only Jones and The Lonely Fires.

SEDITIONARIES - traditionally the first Saturday every month @ the 13th NOTE
- revolutionary music that inspires...

ARE FLOWERS ELECTRIC? - launched June 2009 @ the 13th Note. Directly inspired by the electro pop genius of Nevada Base. It'll be back soon!

UNDER THE PAVING STONES - traditionally the last Saturday every month @ PIVO PIVO...
- a collection of underground alternative sound

NEW DAWN RISING - an oldie from the Beat Club that we've relaunched at The V Club, which is the former Beat Club in Sauchiehall St. Pretty damned similar to Seditionaries and Under The Paving Stones. Might be the last Friday every month. Might not. Featuring some of our favourite new bands. Free admission to the aftershow club.

INFORMATION LIBRE - second Saturday every month @ PIVO PIVO. Usually!
- NEVER MIND the BANS, HERE'S THE PEOPLE'S MUSIC, UNCENSORED AND LIVE
This event was started for bands in Glasgow who keep getting banned from venues. We don't always agree with those bans. This is rock'n'roll, not accountancy.

THE MESCALINE BALLROOM - a psychedelic, baggy trip that has toured several venues in Glasgow...

Plus sporadic events all over the place and our original nights:

THE DARKWAVE OPERA - Flowers In the Dustbin's original event, inspired by the rock'n'roll genius of KICK TO KILL and featured some of the most inspiring alternative bands in Glasgow. Started off in Barfly back in 2007, the 13th Note, then a residency of several months @ The Beat Club. Crept back into it's lair for a while. Last one was Fri 29th August 2008 @ The Captain's Rest. Like Freddy Kreuger, it keeps coming back though.

THE SOUND AND THE FURY - occasionaly we revert to our PUNK roots. See also 2008's anti T In The Park event - Punk IN THE DARK...

The legendary '48 THRILLS - A Glasgow Punk Tale" was launched on Sat 21st April 2007 with a stunning gig at Barfly featuring the original Scottish punk legends THE ZIPS plus the COUNTERFEIT CLASH and Sex Pistols tribute THE FILTH AND THE FURY.

48 THRILLS - A Glasgow Punk Tale

a punk novel by STEPHEN McKEE

48 Thrills tells the story of 4 teenage punks: the music, the fashion, the girls, the fights. 4 desperadoes making a potentially fatal fashion statement in a city which had still to gain its trendy tag. Parents, family, friends, acquaintances and complete strangers have got it in for them. Meanwhile the boys discover love, or lust at least. And then theres legendary gigs: The Rezillos, The Adverts, Clash, Stranglers, Siouxsie and The Banshees, Buzzcocks, Jam, 999 and more.

If youre old enough to remember punk, youll remember the feeling. Punks appearing like aliens in city, town and village streets across the UK. The world was changing. Wasnt it?

A fictional Anarchy In The UK. Never Mind The Bollocks, Heres 48 THRILLS!.

THE SCENARIO

Teenage punk kid Jamie is travelling to see the legendary Sex Pistols reform for a one off gig, Pistols At The Palace. On the way he meets 4 original punks in Glasgow Airport. Two generations collide. The Originals tell their punk stories, from its origins in 1976, to its messy conclusion.

Three decades on. Whos still punk?

Hey there,

Here's one from left field...

Ever wondered what to do in the event of a nuclear threat?

A while ago I found stuff that inspired me to make this film:

Living Under the Shadow of the Nuclear Umbrella

Both artistic (ensure you get the background music!) and educational, it primarily comprises official British government civil defence advice.

Though source materials are quite aged, much remains relevant today.

I encourage all to visit the YouTube page to learn more (Show support! Rate! Comment!) and responsibly circulate as widely as possible, here:

Help to raise awareness.

Say have you checked out my web site recently?

Take care and keep in touch.

Best,
Faber.
