How Sound Carries Over Water by Brenda Graham

"Brenda's poems are like dragonflies that skim over the surface of the water; swooping with delight and diving unexpectedly into the depths of darkness. Her poetic voice is exhilarating and unique, a voice that lifts and drops us into a new place where grace abounds."--Ann Campanella

   Floyd County Moonshine's Blurbs
About me:
Floyd County Moonshine is a literary and arts magazine localized in Floyd, Virginia and the New River Valley. We accept poetry, short stories, and essays addressing all manner of themes; however, preference is given to those works of a rural or Southern/Appalachian nature. We welcome cutting-edge and innovative fiction and poetry in particular.

DEADLINE ISSUE 2.1 September 30.

SUBMISSIONS

Literature

All manuscripts should be submitted electronically to floydshine@gmail.com. We accept previously published material and simultaneous submissions. We acquire one-time rights. Please send your manuscript as a WORD attachment. Cover letters are optional. Short stories and essays should not exceed 8,000 words. Please type the subject/title of your email submission as your full name, and provide a brief biographical sketch accompanying your submission.

Art

Floyd County Moonshine is primarily a literary magazine; however, we reserve pages for several art submissions each issue. We print in black and white; therefore, art in conducive mediums, such as pencil or charcoal, would be most suitable. We encourage, but not restrict, subject matter that expresses an agrarian aesthetic. We would also appreciate art which epitomizes the unique cultural spirit of Floyd. All art submissions should follow a similar protocol as literary submissions.

SUBSCRIPTIONS Floyd County Moonshine is published quarterly in the spring, summer, fall, and winter. Subscriptions are $20.00 for 1 year (4 issues) and $38.00 for 2 years (8 issues). Copies may be purchased individually for $8.00. Email floydshine@gmail.com for a subscription. Please include your name, mailing address, email and telephone number.

Come on by The Lantern this Saturday for the 16 Blocks Art Preview featuring the work of Whitney Waller, Kuru, and Perx. Appetizers will be served.

Also the debut of issue #1 of The Plaid Avenger comic book, and video-projections of some stories we've been covering the past couple of weeks.

$5 and all of the proceeds benefit the construction of 16 Blocks Art House, a gallery that will display local art which will be situated between The Lantern and She-Sha and will be opening in early 2009.
