“…wrists throbbing and swollen from the tight clasp of the handcuffs, Zahida asks the officer in a teary voice, “could you please loosen these handcuffs a little bit? I can’t feel my fingers.” One of the officer’s replies, “wait till we get to the station! After what you’ve done this evening, I don’t think I could trust a word that comes out of your mouth!” Zahida sits back and dejectedly gazes out of the window. As the squad car cruises, the rolling pictures of houses in the night have been forever cast into Zahida’s mind. Her face cramping from hours of crying, Zahida takes another swallow of salted tears and reflects on the events that have unfolded…”

“…as we pull up to the rear of the building, my heart begins to anxiously pound and my stomach starts to feel queasy. The building is tucked away behind several other businesses, at the bottom of a sloping driveway. As we step onto the sidewalk, I observe a young couple getting out of their car and approaching the main entrance of the same building. As the couple walks inside, I begin to feel more unsettled. Shortly thereafter, feelings of guilt, shame, and disgust begin to cloud my mind, so with my stomach in knots I sat back in the car to gather my thoughts and reconsider my actions. After a few minutes of discussion with my girlfriend, I muster enough undignified courage to leave the car to proceed with our business…”

chris m rutledge is considered to be a self-taught painter and currently resides in atlanta, georgia. born on the southside of chicago and educated at tuskegee university and later southern illinois university at carbondale, chris originally studied architecture, due to his lifelong love of drawing. he began painting in 1997 without the guidance of an art instructor. prints of these original paintings, including his first painting created in 1997 are available by request only. his paintings are primarily abstract representations of real life subjects. although he did not major in art, chris later took a few art courses to refine his talent and to learn more about the fundamentals of painting. after taking these courses he took interest in two particular styles of painting known as ‘colorism’ due to his love of vivid colors, and ‘abstract expressionism’ due to his love of taking an object from reality and adding his own ‘twist’. in 2000 he decided to explore another facet of art by deciding on a whim to begin writing. as a result he has written several short fiction stories.
