Fluorescent combine icy cold dance-pop with razor-blade wall of sound resulting in genre-bending music; it’s dark pop that (con)fuses the camp energy of italo with moody textures of shoegaze. From Melbourne, Australia; the band revolves around producer/singer/
songwriter Simon Kapitolina.
Fluorescent began as a duo with Simon and wife Naomi Castricum out of Melbourne’s burgeoning electro scene in 2001. They debuted with their 2005 album; ‘Post Nuclear’, featuring a guest appearences from Deep Country’s Fiona Di Lanzo and self confessed EBM-junkie Nic Toupee. The record spawned 2006’s EP ‘Cattle Brand’, a remix project including
Melbourne djs Adam Askew, Peter Finger, Harris Robotis and Greg Dickinson.
In 2008, Fluorescent’s extended lineup included contributuions on vocals from Aileen Corbett and Leigh Irwin, along with Toby Kelly on drums and Nick Ruljancich on guitars. The result was a matured second record; entitled ‘Winter’. Fluorescent soon became identified as one of many new bands paying homage to the early 90’s shoegaze movement, through their inclusion on Rubber Records 2008 shoegaze compilation ‘Take Me On The Wildest Spree’; which featured the droney anthem ‘Sleeping’.
Genre associations aside, Fluorescent remain very much an electronic, production based project interested in building epic songs with unlikely textures which translate into a darker variety of readymade dancefloor indie.
While live performances over the years have been scarce, their CV includes opening for major acts Ladytron, Midnight Juggernauts, Cut Copy, Pnau & The Scare.

whilst trawling the oxford st strip we discovered dj LOVERTITS, who hosts and plays at HARD ON in sydney.. and of course it was inevitable that we would bring him down and introduce him to melbourne where the hard ons have brains too. DJs DANNY C and KAPITOLINA (john) will make the threesome complete. expect electro-tech-indie-pop-trash in a deliciously queer package.....
