I don't know, I've considered getting a couple rats before. I totally know what you mean, to a degree, about getting overwhelmed. My friend had that happen with mice, and while mice aren't as, uh, space-consuming, she still ended up with about twenty of them before she was able to give them away. She didn't have enough room for them, and it always reeked, so she was, yeah, relieved to finally downsize. I think she still has two girls, but that's it.
They totally aren't as exciting as rats. I went to the pet store to get some food for my snake last week, and they had Prairie Dogs for sale. And I was like, "WAT." until I actually looked at them, and they were ridiculously friendly. One of them kept putting it's paw through the cage bars and just holding the end of my finger. I liked them. Too bad they were $199 apiece. :| Rats are cheaper by, wut, about $180.
