Grinding out distinctive, greasy, New Orleans-influenced funk, Flux5 first hit Colorado stages in 2002. Having a very organic approach, the original band played improvisational funk. Early audiences felt a good vibe, saw something exciting happening on stage and the first Flux5 fans were born. Over the past 5 years, positive changes in musical direction, energy, and personnel have produced Flux5 shows that feature a very exciting, and funky musical experience.
For the last two years, Flux5 has been hitting the road playing venues and clubs all across the central Rocky Mountains and Denver, sharing dates with the likes of Vinyl, Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe, Galactic, Outformation, and Mike Dillon’s Go-Go Jungle, as well as backed the famed New Orleans funk drummer Stanton Moore for a clinic in 2006.
Flux5 is comprised of 5 hard working jazz and funk musicians from the Vail Valley. Collectively they have earned 4 music degrees, logged thousands of hours of stage time, and played numerous music festivals.
Born and raised in Puerto Rico, bassist Richie Vazquez is a talented musician with a tremendous amount of touring experience. Richie supplies the driving, energetic bass lines that give Flux5 its modern, funky foundation.
Raised in the Denver jazz scene, Colorado native Scott Mattson drives the band with fresh, energetic grooves, and a tight funky feel using a small 4 piece bebop drum kit.
Southern born and raised, Nashville rooted guitarist Matt Cheek is the smiling, uninhibited free spirit that lays down the free-flowing guitar lines that give this group its natural feel.
Andy Schmidt’s organically grown keys and soulful vocals are a vital component of Flux5. This long time Colorado resident produces some very funky syncopations using classic, thick, buttery organ sounds.
The fifth musical element of Flux5, is band leader Dave Laub. Armed with the big, fat sound of his tenor saxophone and his great sense of energy, Dave is the mixologist that brings this blend of top-shelf players together.
