From a base in the South of England Paul Walden promoted virtually all of the major touring acts between 1972-1976, from Supertramp to Arthur Brown, including David Bowie and The Who. In 1976 he expanded into Artist Management and Agency with various solo artistes and groups taken on board including Voyager, Leo Sayer and Paul Nicholas. The establishment of a successful music publishing company followed and in 1982 he set up Flying Music and Flying Records.
In his native Scotland Derek Nicol promoted almost all of the major touring acts to visit Scotland during the Sixties, such names as The Searchers, The Troggs, The Kinks, Otis Redding, Deep Purple, The Who, Elton John, Marc Bolan and Fleetwood Mac. In 1971 he moved to London where he set up Mountain Management and managed Nazareth and the Sensational Alex Harvey Band throughout the Seventies. During this time he also established Mountain Records and Mountain Publishing. Later Derek then took the decision to join Paul Walden at The Flying Music Company.
Throughout the last twenty years Flying Music have produced numerous nationwide tours, they have presented a wide variety of artists including Stevie Wonder, Van Morrison, Ray Charles, Elaine Paige, Neil Sedaka, Art Garfunkel, Pat Boone, Smokey Robinson, The Chieftains, Richard Clayderman, The Three Degrees, Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons, The Pouges, Gene Pitney, Engelbert Humperdink, Roger Whittaker, Leo Sayer, The Four Tops, Little Richard, The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, ELO, Chuck Berry, The Temptations, Brenda Lee, Uri Geller, Nana Mouskouri, Kenny Rogers, Paul Young, Glen Campbell, Tammy Wynette and many more.
This innovative approach in creating conceptual packages has also devolved into the world of theatre. Original shows created by the company include "Hollywood and Broadway" which has in the past starred Wayne Sleep, Lorna Luft, Bonnie Langford, Kim Criswell, Dave Willetts and Grace Kennedy, "The Magic of the Musicals" starring Marti Webb and Dave Willetts, "Salute to Sinatra" starring Louis Hoover; "Dancing in the Streets" the official Motown show, starring Martha Reeves, Mary Wilson, Edwin Starr and Freda Payne; "Maximum Rhythm and Blues" starring The Manfreds, Chris Farlowe, Long John Baldry, Colin Blunstone and Alan Price and the spectacular "What A Feeling" - The Rock 'n' Pop Musicals - In Concert starring Gwen Dickey, Limahl, Sonia, Sinitta and Luke Goss.
Flying Music have also produced and promoted major Arena events including "Return Of The Giants" with the fantastic bill of The Four Tops, The Temptations, Jimmy Ruffin, Martha Reeves and The Vandellas and Edwin Starr and the unique "Born To Rock 'n' Roll" that launched a worldwide first by presenting Little Richard, Chunk Berry and Fats Domino together in concert. They also toured Van Morrison with Ray Charles in their first ever Tour together as well as reuniting the 4 original Monkees for the first time in 30 years. Other Arena presentations have included Kenny Rogers, Tammy Wynette and Glen Campbell.
Flying Music continues to go from strength to strength. The large scale Olivier Award nominated production show "The Rat Pack Live From Las Vegas" - a celebration of the unforgettable music of Frank, Sammy and Dean enjoyed a successful run at The Savoy Theatre in London's West End. "Dancing in the Streets" enjoyed 3 years in London's West End and joined classic favourites like "Tango Pasion" and "Ferry Cross the Mersey" which have all been successfully transferred to London's West End by Flying Music.
