  • Bio

Flying Sutra, featuring veteran improviser Robert Cozzolino (percussion) and former Don Caballero bassist George Draguns (guitar, electronics), started rehearsals in August, 2006 in an 1890s former millworker house in Media, PA. Flying Sutra combines passages of free-improvisation with loosely-composed melodic structures that allow for a gradual build up of high-intensity playing. Their music has been described as “cosmic” and routinely draws comparisons to psychedelia infiltrated by free-jazz and punk flourishes. Their name, contributed by friend Alex Baker, refers to a transcendental meditation technique whereby the practitioner’s body allegedly levitates and moves in space. Baker’s father knew a man who supposedly mastered this practice. Flying Sutra’s music suggests this transcendental capacity. Cozzolino was active in the Chicago experimental music scene in the 1990s, where he performed with some of its most influential musicians. He later participated in the improvised music community in Madison, Wisconsin. In 1993 he co-founded The Institute for Sonic Ponderance with Richard Holland (www.ponderance.org/music/Cozzolino.html), with whom he continues to collaborate. Draguns played bass with a number of bands, including Don Caballero and Storm and Stress. Since 2001, Draguns has been increasingly engaged in solo projects including contributions to a number of film soundtracks. In 2004 he collaborated with performance artist Martha McDonald on music for her piece Drown’d in mine own tears. He released the CD Huffing Gas in 2005 (www.dragunsound.com). Cozzolino and Draguns can also be heard on a CD accompanying the ‘Zine, Elk (no. 11) put out by Jocko Weyland and based in New York (www.elkzine.com). In 2007 they released their first album (yes, we said album, youngsters) on Deep Water Acres records, "Levitate and Dissolve." See our blog for reviews. Since December 2007 Flying Sutra has been recording new material as a duo and with the performance enhancing bass playing of Brian Murray, a stalwart of the Philadelphia music scene. A new release is inevitable. In the meantime enjoy the sneak preview of Baltic Suicide, which marks the Flying Sutra three-piece debut. Watch this space for upcoming performances and a forthcoming CD.

The Apprentice presents this work wordless, naive, and among a silent choir (a collected choir of people who are energetically and physically present but sonically null.) I am learning to be as an apprentice. L'amour et Allume, Teaadora As an ApprenticeI am learning to be an artist, a woman, a succinct and fluent French speaker, it is the softest sounding language, the language of love, and of the artists romantic tradition. Please give me some reponse, ideas, love, questions, critique, and a chance regarding my mess
